The Barbizon school (circa 1830–1870) of painters is named after the village of Barbizon near Fontainebleau Forest Fontainebleau is a commune in the metropolitan area of Paris, France. In 1824 the Salon de Paris The Salon , or rarely Paris Salon (French: Salon de Paris), beginning in 1725 was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. Between 1748–1890 it was the greatest annual or biannual art event in the western world. Since 1881 it was organized by the Société des Artistes Français exhibited works of John Constable John Constable was an English Romantic painter. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for his landscape paintings of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home—now known as "Constable Country"—which he invested with an intensity of affection. "I should paint my own places best", he wrote to his friend John Fisher in 1821,. His rural scenes influenced some of the younger artists of the time, moving them to abandon formalism and to draw inspiration directly from nature. Natural scenes became the subjects of their paintings rather than mere backdrops to dramatic events.

In the first century B.C., Roman frescoes of landscapes decorated rooms that have been preserved at Pompeii and Herculaneum. In The Gleaners (1857), Millet portrays three peasant women working at the harvest. There is no drama and no story told, merely three peasant women in a field. Gleaners are poor women gathering what's left after the rich owners of the field finished harvesting. The owners and their laborers are seen in the back of the painting. Millet here shifted the focus, the subject matter, from the rich and prominent to those at the bottom of the social ladders. Millet also didn't paint their faces to emphasize their anonymity and marginalized position. Their bowed bodies are representative of their every day hard work.

Corot was the leading painter of the Barbizon school of France in the mid-nineteenth century. He is a pivotal figure in landscape painting and his vast output simultaneously references the Neo-Classical tradition and anticipates the plein-air innovations of, Théodore Rousseau, Jean-François Millet Jean-François Millet was a French painter and one of the founders of the Barbizon school in rural France. Millet is noted for his scenes of peasant farmers; he can be categorized as part of the naturalism and realism movements and Charles-François Daubigny; other members included Jules Dupré, Constant Troyon, Charles Jacque, Narcisse Virgilio Diaz, Charles Olivier de Penne, Henri Harpignies Henri-Joseph Harpignies was a French landscape painter of the Barbizon school, Gabriel Hippolyte LeBas (1812-1880), Albert Charpin Albert Charpin, born in Grasse, France in 1842, died in Asnières-sur-Seine in 1924. A pupil of Charles-François Daubigny, Charpin was a painter of natural landscapes with, typically, a shepherdess and her guardian-dog taking care of animals, cows or sheep. Characteristic of his paintings are the natural poses and serenity of his actors, in a, Félix Ziem, Anton Mauve, François-Louis Français and Alexandre DeFaux.
Both Rousseau (1867) and Millet (1875) died at Barbizon.
