Civilian Body Armor: What is the highest class-level that civilians can legally purchase and wear?
Q. Can a civilian purchase class III or IV body armor? Where could he/she legally purchase it? Is the legality different from state to state?
Asked by Curious - Tue Nov 25 20:52:34 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well I'm no longer in Law Enforcement, I'm in CA but if I walk into a police supply store I can buy Class III no problem, I've never tried to buy Class IV but am not aware of any rules against it.

What body armor do British soldiers wear?
Q. I recently found out about the incredible Dragon Skin body armor and the whole argument over why US troops don't use it as it is far superior to what they are currently wearing, which is called Interceptor. I am British and was wondering what British troops wear and how it holds up against these other kinds. I'd like to find out what it's called and how good it is. Thanks!

A. Osprey Improved Combat Body Armour. The usual complaint is that it's too heavy, too bulky and restricts movement. But that's what body armor, no matter what kind it is, does. There's an add-on(?) kit also callked Kestrel for higher protection levels. Dragon Skin is not as great as it's manufaturers, or the media, want you think it is. It's not especially superior and fails under a variety of cercumstances that you don't see tested on the television, such as rounds coming in at other than straight on angles (the disks overlap--think about it), and the adhesive that hold them in place fails under extreme temperatures. Add to that that the manufacturer has misrepresented the certifications of his product--I don't want it.

Why did troops have to buy their own body armor during the former Republican administration?
Q. Republicans did not send enough troops the first time and now I learn that under the former Republican administration troops families had to send their kids their own body armor. All I have found from Republicans is that "those troops did not need body armor for the jobs they were doing".
Asked by iamct01 - Tue Dec 1 15:51:24 2009 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Because the Republican Congress did not support the troops, while at the same time Republicans were shouting "Support the troops!" at Democrats. It's the Democrats that finally got the body armor for our troops -- and the GI Bill, and so many other things. If you care about the troops, seriously, research for yourself how each party votes when it comes to our troops and our veterans. You will discover that the Dems support the troops and the Repubs don't -- consistently.

Why is it illegal for a felon to wear body armor?
Q. I have seen this in the news twice now, in just the last week. Two separate incidences where somene was arrested because of wearing body armor. I can understand weapons, but I can't comprehend why it is illegal for a felon to posess or wear body armor. Can someone explain the origin of this federal law? Why it exists? It seems like, once a convicted felon, mended ways or not, they are no longer allowed to protect themselves. I just want to know.

A. A reasonable, average individual does not need to wear body armor. Body armor is only necessary if you believe you are going to enter into a situation where you might get shot. A felon should never willingly or knowingly enter into a situation where there might be gunfire. Most reasonable people would assume that if you are going to wear body armor it is because you are going to be involved in a situation where you might get shot at - possibly even by the police. Felons have no business being in such a situation; removing their right to wear body armor is a means of preventing them from involving themselves in such a situation. Any felon who has credible evidence that their life is truly in danger from a threat that they cannot… [cont.]

Asked by bmw97ic008 - Wed May 27 23:22:57 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No it is illegal to use, the army banned it two months before testing and staged a test to make it look bad. All other tests on the armor have gone incredibly well. The Army does not want to purchase it because it is twice as much as interceptor armor. That is one theory. However many people including the army sais that the reason they do not want the dragon skin armor is because the glue that holds the scales together melts at high temp, making it pretty useless in the middle east

What is the physics behind how body armor works?
Q. I have to do a term paper in my physics class (How Things Work 104), and was wondering if someone could give me an explanation on what the physics behind body armor is?

A. well if you're talk about bullet proof body armor like kevlar it's going to something like this. The point of kevlar is to make sure that no matter how fast the bullet is going, it will not penetrate the material so that vital organs aren't injured. Now, although your body armor can stop a bullet, the force of the bullet will still be the (if not more). The force of impact should be similar to that of a man hitting you with a pick axe with full force and can cause internal bleeding or damage to the organs, regardless of no penetration.

Asked by The - Sat Jun 13 15:05:02 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well, you are asking for a lot of info there, much to much to reasonably answer. So I will stick to the body armor. A lot of that depends on which armor. The last generation is the Interceptor Body Armor, or IBA. The complete set with trauma plates comes in at around 33 lbs. The newest is the Improved Outer Tactical Vest, or IOTV. This weighs around 30 lbs. Add in ammunition pouches, grenades, and that gives another 5 lbs or so. 4-10 lbs for water. 8-25 lbs for weapon (could even be more). The new helmet is the MICH, and it weighs around 3.6 lbs. Then there is the MOLLE rucksack, which when fully loaded can be anywhere from 35-100 lbs. And the other misc. gear that we carry. Radios, camelback hydration bladders, flash lights,… [cont.]

A. The outer is kevlar, and the disks are carbon fiber and steel. try youtube or army times for more info on the armor. Be careful what you read on army times though they try to dis the armor. But it is far superior to the INterceptor, because it destroys the bullet fragments within the scales, and it has the ability to wrap around the body.

What is a good BODY ARMOR, PISTOL choice for a Public School teacher?
Q. I teach in a nyc public school as you know, there has been a school shooting every other week this month (including the Amish schoolhouse and the one's in Canada). I've decided, I'm not going to get caught out there. what is a good body armor and pistol combination that I can buy? I need body armor that's light and can stand up to both knife attacks and at least 9mm rounds. I also need a good suggestion for a small concealable pistol - probably in 9mm or .45 cal - something that has enough stopping power to put a 175 pound student out of commission. Is there a body armor type that won't show through a typical collarless shirt?

Legitimate law enforcement, military and security units will have identification patches that identify their agency or large general ID patches that read POLICE / SHERIFF / etc. --- By head gear did you mean the new military helmut or the facial mask made of ceramic composite? Or both? The helmut alone, if it is real, is going to cost someone $400 for level IIIA. Body armor isn't cheap and a whole set would represent quite an investment. --- In any case this is something that your local police would be interested… [cont.]

Has anyone wore motorcross body armor for street riding or am I being silly?
Q. not sure if this is overkill or not. It looks like a mesh shirt, but it has elbow, forearm, back, chest, and a kidney belt. I already have a leather joe rocket blaster jacket, but the DD foam doesnt seem very safe. i wanted to take it out and wear this upper body armor instead. So thank you for reading me, i was looking the icon knee protectors. They dont have velcro straps, but instead you put them on like a pair of jean or socks. They just slip on and have a stretchy material that form fits. A little high, maybe $60,but i worry about that too

A. Motocross gear is made to take a different type of hit than road gear. MX protection is designed to deflect roost and offer impact protection from rocks and other pointy and painful objects. Top crash speeds on an MX bike are maybe 70mph, but usually occur at much slower speeds - below 30mph. So the foam is denser, and more resistant to punctures, but will transfer high-speed hits to the body. Street protection is designed for high speed sliding impacts. The dual-density foam compresses in stages when hit, and doesn't transfer shock to the body - using the stages to absorb impact and displace it. Also, street armor usually has more protection for the spine and tailbone. I guess it depends on the type of riding you're doing. If it's… [cont.]

Are Marines allowed to wear DragonSkin body armor?
Q. Does the USMC allow their men to wear DragonSkin body armor? or did they ban it like the Army did? In my opinion, DragonSkin is the best piece of body armor out there, but why do they not allow Marines, not Army (I'm not talking about the Army so don't mention it) to wear it even if they bought it themselves?

A. I don't think the Army banned, I believe that was a Department of Defense action. It was banned because it was determined to not provide the level of protection that our soldiers and sailor required/needed. Last I heard, the company was appealing it but there had not been a determination yet.
