What broadway / musical theater songs are good for auditions?
Q. I have an audition coming up for a theater group, and any appropriate musical theater or broadway song idea is good! :] I am an alto, but have a wide range. Lists of songs and websites are helpful, thanks!

A. If you're really good and want to show off: Defying Gravity from Wicked If you want something more low-key, I'm going to go with a more original RENT suggestion: One Song Glory. Unless you can belt and sing high, in which case Out Tonight might be a better option. If you want something older and a total classic: Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific, or Hopelessly Devoted To You from Grease. If you want something light and fun: So Much Better from Legally Blonde, or Popular from Wicked. If you want to come off as the classic actress, just go with Seasons of Love from RENT. Everyone worships that song. I hope I helped:) xoRog

What is the most famous Broadway musical?
Q. I'm in the middle of a debate over what the most famous Broadway musical is. I keep saying that it is Phantom of the Opera, but my cousin keeps saying that it is Les Miserables. I know that Wicked and Cats are really popular as well, and so is Grease (Or is that even on Broadway?). Any and all help is appreciated on the answer to this question.

A. Phantom of the Opera currently holds the title of the longest running show in Broadway history...(surpassing Cats by quite a bit). However... Les Miserables currently holds the title of the longest running show in the West End. That production has been open longer than Phantom has been. Both were written within a year of each other... both have had international productions. Both were multiple Tony Winners. I don't think it's really an issue that has an absolute answer. (But for sure it's not Cats)

What broadway as a solo tap dance?
Q. I am doing a broadway "talent" showcase for my school. No one else knows how to tap therefore no one to cheoreograph me. I could get someone to teach me but I would like to find something else. Is there a broadway tap solo number that someone can learn on their own. I was thinking 42nd street but it might not look good with 1 person. Suggestions?

A. How about "I've Got Rhythm"? It's on the Crazy For You soundtrack. You can find other people dancing to it if you search on YouTube and get idea from their choreogrpahy and add your own!

What is a good Broadway song for a Baritone with a range from the G2 to G4?
Q. I can sing songs like This is the Moment and Memory, with slightly lowered key. Any Suggestions. I don't knwo much in the genre of the Broadway style and am trying to broaden my horizons.

A. Try anything from the Phantom of the Opera that wsa sung by the Phantom. I have a bit of a baritone as well and I am able to sing those ones without much problem. Some examples are: "angel of Music" (though it's a duet/quartet), "Phantom of the Opera" (also a duet), Music of the Night (one of my favorites) Another good Pahntom song is: "Past the point of No Return". You can also try broadway classics like: "Old man River" From "Till the Clouds Roll By", or The Impossible Dream from "Man from La Mancha - The Don Quixote Story" Those are the only ones I can think of right now. Hope these will help.

A. Is your throat bothering you do to practicing? You may have picked something with a little to much range. I would stay away from current Broadway songs because everyone else will be singing them and the people judging you may begin to tune out. Sing and record your voice and play it back. Remember you will be nervous, so don't pick a difficult piece unless your use to singing solo. Good luck!

A. I'm not sure what you are asking. Are you asking what a stage actress makes in the city of Chicago, IL? Or are you asking what an actress in the Broadway (NYC) production of Chicago the musical? If it's the first, please note that there is no "Broadway" in Chicago. The only "Broadway" is in NYC. And the pay an actress receives varies dramatically (no pun intended). Make sure you have a "day job" when you start out -- the story of the actor who waits tables while waiting for their "big break" is all too common. In a Broadway (NYC) production, you get at least Equity minimum, which I believe is currently $1,509/week.

Any suggestions on a Broadway song to audition with?
Q. I am 13 yrs old, auditioning for a summer program and I need a Broadway song. I am a mezzo soprano, and songs I'm thinking of include "The Wizard and I" from Wicked and "Gimme, Gimme" from Thoroughly Modern Millie. If you know any songs that would work for me, I would be much obliged to hear them!

A. Here are some other ideas to consider, too: Sweet Charity: "Big Spender" (Very cute... put a lot of action and drama into it...) Oklahoma! "I Cain't Say No" South Pacific: I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta' My Hair" My Fair Lady: "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" (Don't forget the Cockney accent) West Side Story: "I Feel Pretty" Annie: "I Think I'm Gonna' Like It Here" Once Upon a Mattress: "The Swamps of Home" (Hilarious if you put a LOT of DRAMA into it!!!) A Chorus Line: "The Music and the Mirror" or "Dance 10, Looks 3" BTW... to macymiche... above... Phantom of the Opera IS Broadway... in fact, it is the LONGEST running Broadway Show in NYC!!! ; ) "Wishing you Were Somehow Here Again" from that would be excellent... but not… [cont.]

How do I decorate a Broadway themed bedroom?
Q. My 10 year old wants a Broadway themed bedroom. What colour to paint the walls? What "extras" can I do to make it special? She has lots of posters, awards and autographs, is that enough? How to frame them to make them stand out? Any suggestions appreciated.

A. It would be really cool if you could do murals on the wall like a broadway sign on one wall (you know like coming soon to broadway then youre daughter's name) then on another wall a chorus line (of dancers in gold or something fun liek that) If that seems to tacky then maybe decorate it to look like the inside of a nice theater with rich colors of red or blue then have one wall painted to look like a stage. As for framing things i dont know if it would be possihble but if you could frame them in lights that would just be a really cool touch.

How much money do actors on Broadway make?
Q. I know this is probably a huge range, but I am interested in that range. We just got back from a trip to NY and saw 2 Broadway Musicals and my daughter asked me how much did the actors make, and I didn't really have an answer. A. Yes: current Equity minimum on Broadway is $1,422 per week (remember, that's for a 6 day work week, in which you'll probably do 8 shows). Because theatre is always a buyers' market--there are way more talented people available than there are parts--there's not much room to negotiate at the low end. Broadway in particular is about marketing and product, so if--as you describe--someone is not very well known, though they've been in shows, they're not likely to get more than minimum. (But that also includes health insurance and payments to their retirement fund amounting to another 12% or so.) Featured performers can of course command more, because they have names, so their salary is negotiable. And stars are always negotiable because… [cont.]

A. you have to interest a producing company or get your own financing. To get in on broadway requires a union crew All your actors, director, stagehands, dancers, musicians are union. You get a room large enough to rehearse it. Sometimes you rent a back street theater with a stage sufficently large to stage your play. You hire an accompanist, usually a pianist, if it's a musical and a choreographer and a director. Then you cast your actors from the union ranks or you pay fines if you use non union ones actors and dancers can't work to your music or you have to pay them. You are allowed two free call backs per actor after that you pay them $400 a day for each call back. Once you sign an actor they are paid $1,900 a week minimum, don't… [cont.]

A. Forget about any films you've seen about an unknown talent going to New York and getting cast to star in a Broadway show the next day. Reality is different. When you audition for a Broadway show, they're going to look at your resume. Now, if you are phenomenally talented, that's great. However, a lot of auditions involve first simply lining up with a group of about twenty people and having the auditors merely look at the resumes. Here's why: There are a lot of talented people in show business. There are also a lot of UNtalented people. The resume is a quick sketch of where you've worked, which is an indicator that you may have enough talent. Q. I really want to be on broadway! I want to know how to get a head start. I am already starring in my school musicals. What else can I do?
