Q. I have been working in the construction and maintenance fields for years for other people and I have been thinking about starting my own handyman business in Nevada. I would not have any employees, it would just be myself. What would I need to get my own business started and where can I look to find out more information?

A. I ve been thinking about the same thing. These are a sequence of steps that might help you. 1)Make a list of what services you want to perform and at what cost to the customer. Normally this is called a business plan. 2)Business cards. This can be done right on your computer (cheap). 3)Make a flyer that describes your services 4)Let your services be known by [networking] with family, friends, local schools, city parks and recreation, people at your church, and so on. Networking is key. An example: churches normally don t have a budget for a full time person in maintenance. More like 15 to 20 hours a week. A. There are a couple of different names for that in Canada. Some of the work motioned is carried out by an electrician(construction and maintenance or Industrial), an industry power electrician, and also by a lineman. For searching for jobs you should search utility companies as most high voltage work is done by utility companies, also the IBEW(international brotherhood of electrical workers) also has lineman divisions. I know in my IBEW local(Toronto) there are always lineman jobs and I think that they would give you a hand in coming to work in Canada.
