The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is a civilian intelligence agency An intelligence agency is a governmental agency that is devoted to information gathering for purposes of national security and defense. Means of information gathering may include espionage, communication interception, cryptanalysis, cooperation with other institutions, and evaluation of public sources. The assembly and propagation of this of the United States government The federal government of the United States is the central government entity established by the United States Constitution, which shares sovereignty over the United States with the governments of the individual U.S. states. The federal government has three branches: the legislative, executive, and judicial. Through a system of separation of powers.

It is an independent U.S. Government agency responsible for providing national security National security refers to the requirement to maintain the survival of the nation-state through the use of economic, military and political power and the exercise of diplomacy intelligence Theories of intelligence can be divided into those based on a unilinear construct of general intelligence and those based on multiple intelligences. Francis Galton, influenced by his cousin Charles Darwin, was the first to advance a theory of general intelligence. For Galton, intelligence was a real faculty with a biological basis that could be to senior U.S. policymakers A political leader is an individual who is involved in influencing public decision making through the influence of politics or a person who influences the way a society is governed. This includes people who hold decision-making positions in government, and people who seek those positions, whether by means of election, coup d'état, appointment,.

It is the successor of the Office of Strategic Services The Office of Strategic Services was a United States intelligence agency formed during World War II. It was the wartime intelligence agency, and it was the predecessor of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) (OSS) formed, during World War II, to coordinate espionage Espionage or spying involves an individual obtaining information that is considered secret or confidential without the permission of the holder of the information. Espionage is inherently clandestine, as the legitimate holder of the information may change plans or take other countermeasures once it is known that the information is in unauthorized activities between the branches of the US military services. The National Security Act of 1947 established the CIA, affording it "no police or law enforcement functions, either at home or abroad." One year later his mandate was expanded to include “sabotage, anti-sabotage, demolition and evacuation measures…. Subversion (and) assistance to underground resistance movements, guerrillas and refugee liberation movements, and support of indigenous anti-communist elements in threatened countries of the free world” [6]

Today, the CIA's primary function is collecting Intelligence Collection Management is the process of managing and organizing the collection of intelligence information from various sources. The collection department of an intelligence organization may attempt basic validation of that which it collects, but is not intended to analyze its significance. It is a blurry line between validation and, and analyzing Intelligence Analysis Management is the process of managing and organizing the analytical processing of raw intelligence information into finished intelligence. The terms "analysis", "production", and "processing" all are used in this phase that is informally called "connecting the dots". Creating an " information about foreign governments, corporations, and individuals which it uses to advise public policymakers. The agency conducts covert operations A covert operation is a military, intelligence, or political activity carried out in such a way that the identity of the sponsors of the operation is concealed or kept secret. While the operation may become known to the enemy or the world, covert operations are intended so that the parties responsible cannot be traced, or at worst proven, paramilitary A paramilitary is a force whose function and organization are similar to those of a professional military force, but which is not regarded as having the same status. The term uses the Greek prefix para- , also seen in words such as paramedic actions and exerts foreign political influence through its Special Activities Division The Special Activities Division is a division of the United States Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) National Clandestine Service (NCS), responsible for covert action and "special activities". These activities include covert political action and paramilitary operations. Within SAD there are two separate groups, one for paramilitary. Prior to December 2004, the CIA was literally the central intelligence organization for the US government, charged with coordinating and overseeing not only its own activities, but also the activities of the intelligence community The United States Intelligence Community is a cooperative federation of 16 separate United States government agencies that work separately and together to conduct intelligence activities considered necessary for the conduct of foreign relations and the protection of the national security of the United States. Member organizations of the IC include as a whole. The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 is an Act of Congress introduced by U.S. Senator Susan M. Collins of Maine. The Senate approved the bill 96-2, and President George W. Bush signed the Act on December 17, 2004, making it law. The Electronic Frontier Foundation objected to Act's potential effects on civil liberties. The created the office of the Director of National Intelligence Under 50 U.S.C. § 403-3a, it is desired that either the Director or the Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence be an active duty commissioned officer in the armed forces or have training or experience in military intelligence activities and requirements. No more than one officer can hold either position during the same term. The (DNI), who took over some of the government and intelligence community (IC)-wide functions that had previously been the CIA's. The DNI manages the United States Intelligence Community and in so doing it manages the intelligence cycle Within the context of government, military and business affairs, intelligence is intended to help decision-makers at every level to make informed decisions. Among the functions that moved to the DNI were the preparation of estimates reflecting the consolidated opinion of the 16 IC agencies, and preparation of briefings for the president.

2004 was a critical year in the history of the CIA, as there is a marked difference between the agency as it was during the period that it bore IC-wide responsibilities, and the agency as it is today, given its present set of responsibilities. The IC still has internal politics,[7] although an increasing number of interagency "centers", as well as the Intellipedia Intellipedia is an online system for collaborative data sharing used by the United States intelligence community . It was established as a pilot project in late 2005 and formally announced in April 2006 and consists of three wikis running on JWICS, SIPRNet, and Intelink-U. The highest level of classification allowed for information on the three information sharing mechanism, are hoped to improve cooperation between each member.

The current CIA still has a number of functions in common with other countries' intelligence agencies; see relationships with foreign intelligence agencies. The CIA's headquarters is in Langley Langley is an unincorporated community in the census-designated place of McLean in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States in Fairfax County, Virginia Fairfax County is a county in Northern Virginia, in the United States. As of January 2007[update], the estimated population of the county is 1,077,000, making it by far the most populous jurisdiction in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the most populous jurisdiction in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Fairfax was the first county to reach a six-, a few miles west of Washington, D.C. Washington, D.C. , formally the District of Columbia and commonly referred to as Washington, the District, or simply D.C., is the capital of the United States, founded on July 16, 1790. The City of Washington was originally a separate municipality within the Territory of Columbia until an act of Congress in 1871 effectively merged the City and the along the Potomac River.

Sometimes, the CIA is referred to euphemistically in government and military parlance as Other Government Agencies (OGA), particularly when its operations in a particular area are an open secret An open secret is a concept or idea that is "officially" secret or restricted in knowledge, but is actually widely known; or refers to something which is widely known to be true, but which none of the people most intimately concerned is willing to categorically acknowledge in public.[8][9] Other terms include The Company[10][11][12][13] and The Agency.

What degree would I need to be accepted into the CIA or NSA?
Q. When I go to college, I am planning on getting a political science or business degree. I imagine that a political science degree would go farther than a business degree would when applying to the CIA, but I can't think of what other degrees would help.

A. A degree in one of the hard sciences such as Chemistry, physics or engineering would be helpful.
