It refers to a local, ecclesiastical community or territory, including its main church building, perhaps one or more chapels of ease and other, but civil parishes have often deviated from the latter's borders as time has progressed.

As there is no common stratum of local governance across the countries of the United Kingdom Countries of the United Kingdom is a term used to describe England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales: these four together form the sovereign state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
