Etymology

Possibly a minced version of the oath "(Oh) God!" (pronounced by Londoners to sound more like "gawd"). Possibly inspired by the famous American newspaperman James Gordon Bennett, Jr., a New York newspaper proprietor and playboy during the late nineteenth and early twentiethth centuries who became widely known for his extravagant lifestyle and shocking behaviour.
