Ida-Viru County (Estonian Estonian (eesti keel; pronounced [ˈeːsti ˈkeːl] ) is the official language of Estonia, spoken by about 1.1 million people in Estonia and tens of thousands in various émigré communities. It is an Uralic language and is closely related to Finnish: Ida-Viru maakond), or Ida-Virumaa, is one of 15 counties of Estonia Estonia /ɛsˈtoʊniə/ (Estonian: Eesti), officially the Republic of Estonia (Estonian: Eesti Vabariik), is a country in Northern Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Gulf of Finland, to the west by the Baltic Sea, to the south by Latvia (343 km), and to the east by the Russian Federation (338.6 km). The territory of Estonia covers 45,227. It is the most north-eastern part of the country. The county contains large deposits of oil shale Oil shale, an organic-rich fine-grained sedimentary rock, contains significant amounts of kerogen from which technology can be used to extract liquid hydrocarbons. The name oil shale is a misnomer as geologists would not necessarily classify the rock as a shale, and its kerogen differs from crude oil. Kerogen requires more processing to use than - the main mineral A mineral is a naturally occurring solid formed through geological processes that has a characteristic chemical composition, a highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties. A rock, by comparison, is an aggregate of minerals and/or mineraloids, and need not have a specific chemical composition. Minerals range in composition mined in Estonia. As oil shale is used in thermal power plants, the earth in Ida-Viru literally holds the largest power capacity in Estonia. The capital of the county is the town of Jõhvi Jõhvi is a town in north-eastern Estonia, and the capital of Ida-Viru County. The town is also an administrative centre of Jõhvi Commune. It is situated 50 km from the Russian border which is administratively united with the Jõhvi Parish Jõhvi Parish is an Estonian municipality located in Ida-Viru County. It has a population of 13,174 (2006) and an area of 124 km² (48 mi²). 169,688 people live in Ida-Viru County – constituting 12.7% of the total population in Estonia (as of January 2009).[1]
