Garmin US TOPO 24K National Parks east question?
Q. For anyone who has this map pack, i have a question. Does this map pack have topo graphs for the whole east coast and higher detail ones for the national parks listed on the product page? or is it just topo maps of the national parks?
Asked by big puffy shoes - Thu Apr 10 21:04:26 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Topo maps are included for the areas listed on this web page - Only these areas are covered. Topo maps are not provided for areas not on this list. Just interstates and highways - no streets. For topo maps of all other areas you have to get Garmin Topo U.S. 2008 which covers all 50 states. The advantage of the 24K National Park maps is greater detail.

RAINFOREST: If you only had one day to spend in San Jose, Costa Rica?
Q. If you only had one day to spend in San Jose, Costa Rica and wanted to go see the Rainforest, where would you go? I found all the National Parks list for Costa Rica, but really don't know which one to go to. I hear of all the exotic and rare wild life I want to see - the sloths, red macaws, monkeys, etc. in the Rainforest and wish to see these sorts of things even if it is farther. So, what is also the CLOSEST things to do (outside of San Jose City tours) but not just seeing a coffee plantation or butterfly farm? I know about the Arenal Volcano, but what is the best rainforest? (And what is the best rainforest/park to see all the wildlife) And what is the closest rainforest if not the best? I travelled and stayed in the Daintree… [cont.]

A. if you like your camera be careful!! i went to Costa Rica and the humidity and sudden rain in the rain forest ruined my camera, a very nice one and i was quite upset. i would recommend getting a waterproof case. San Jose just isn't that close to most of the non-traveled rainforest's. the best one for wildlife (for me) was the cloud forest (Monte Verde) it was amazing!! there were sloths just hanging by the doors and windows and hummingbirds everywhere! also iguanas and toucans and wild butterflies. more than i can mention. amazing huge old trees with cactus growing on the higher branches, the base covered in moss and other small plants. i would also recommend la fortuna waterfall as an extremely beautiful photo spot, it's an amazing… [cont.]

A. I have been to all three on multiple occasions. Which is best for a family vacation depends on how much time you have and what sort of things you are into (and what time of year you are going). I would probably lean toward Yellowstone as being the best for most families as it has a wide range of easy to access attractions. Here are my takes on each: Arches - This is a really cool place and the rock formations are so impressive they almost look fake. However, Arches is fairly small for a National Park (in many ways it is more like a National Monument). You could pretty much see all the main sites here in a single busy day or a couple of easy ones. Although you would be hard pressed to spend more than 2 days at Arches there are… [cont.]

Which trail to hike in Shenandoah National Park with my dog?
Q. My fiance and I are going to Luray Caverns with our dog this week and we were also planning on driving down skyline drive. I was wondering what the best trail would be for hiking with our small dog. We would like to see some waterfalls if possible. I know there is a list of trails that dogs are not allowed on. I was wondering if anyone has done this with their dog and has any suggestions.

A. The Rose River Loop would be a nice hike (dogs on a leash are welcome). It is a four-mile loop, (rated moderate due to the 900ft + ascent). It starts at mile marker 49.4 of Skyline Dr, in the central district of the Shenandoah National Park. You will see a number of pools and cascades, including Rose River Falls. You can also take a short side trip to Dark Hallow Falls. Details: Park at mile 49.4 at the Fishers Gap Overlook parking lot on the west side of Skyline Drive. Walk to the north end of the parking lot and cross the drive to the east. Go down the fire road to a cement post (very short distance). Turn left onto the Skyline-Big Meadows horse trail. It is blazed yellow at first, then veer right (0.6 mile) at another cement… [cont.]

A few questions concerning U.S. National Parks?
Q. Hi there :) As some of you might seen my answers here, usually concerning translations from Polish to English, and Viceversa, you may recall me being a student of English. With most of these questions I have managed to deal myself, but there still are some that are like a bit troublesome. Where can I find a list of animals of a region?
Q. I took pictures of a lizard I've never seen before in big bend national park, and I would like to find out what it's called, because there's a slight chance the lizard has never been seen in this park and I've made a discovery, which would be pretty sweet. Is there a database that lists all the lizards in the region? thanks

A. The best on-line guide to lizards or any other species is this one: Which is the eNature On-line Field Guide. You can browse by region to narrow your choices down. You can choose several different variables. A non on-line resource would be the Peterson Field Guide to Western Reptiles and Amphibians and Field Guide to Eastern Reptiles and Amphibians. I think this series is one of the better field guide series out there. For reptiles and amphibians and any other species in North America. Best of luck in your lizard search!

Q. We are definitely seeing the Grand Canyon. It's a 6 day trip. We are flying in and out from Las Vegas. We want to plan a family vacation, and we picked out several places but we can't decide where to go. They are: -Monument National Park -4 Corners -Antelope Canyon -Arches National Park -Bryce Canyons -Zion Canyons Please list if you have been to any of these and why you would choose one over the other. Do you know of a website that can map a route for specifically these places and also inform me of places to stay along the way. What route would you recommend? Thanks! And also Secret Canyon I'm from NY. Landing in Las Vegas, NV. Departing out Las Vegas, NV. I meant Monument Valley*

A. Glacier National Park is one of the best places that I have ever seen for wild berries. Huckleberries (similar to blueberries) are very common. My personal favorite is the thimbleberry. It looks and tastes sort of like a raspberry and is named because the fruit is sort of shaped like a thimble. Thimbleberries tend to grow near the bottom of valleys and canyons while the huckleberries are often found in open areas and exposed slopes. Both berries are ripe around late summer to early fall (probably getting hard to find by now). Other edible plants in the Glacier area include serviceberry, wild strawberry, Yampah and Canada Violet. A great resource on the subject is the book "Plants of Waterton-Glacier National Parks and The North… [cont.]
