Q. i am moving to lake toba from Rochester ny. to get there i am going by plane and im landing in Medan. i have a good friend there who will help me buy a used motorcycle. from there at 11pm we will go to toba like on the 5 hour drive. i am 14 now, and i will be 15 when i leave. the driving age is 17, but cops let it slip. i am wondering since we are leaving at 11 pm, and i shouldn't be driving in the city...will i make it? are there night police? are there many night police? will the cops let it slip if i am an american?

A. Technically, yes, you will need a license. In order to obtain a license in Indonesia you need to be seventeen years old. However, there are ways around this. The first way is the simplest. Simply carry 50,000 Rp in your wallet and if a policeman stops you and asks to see your ID give him to 50,000 bill. He will very gladly let you be on your way. From my experiences and the experiences of my friends in Indonesia, this will work over 95% of the time. The second way is to obtain a fake SIM. A. I am not completely sure, but my advice would be to check with the embassy to see if they do give background checks. If they don't, I would not trust this man. You really shouldn't have even trusted him in the first place, but since you obviously want to go through with it... then just make sure your safe. In other countries they don't have as many laws protecting you as you would in the united states (assuming you are from there) or other more developed countries. Just be careful. This man might have given you a fake name, If you can't get a background check don't go. Be safe!
