Q. I wil be a freshman in college this year, and right now I am living in Maryland and Missouri. I want to go to Virginia Tech, but the only way my parents will pay for school is if I go to a community college for a year first. So with my living circumstances, I was going to go to Crowder Community College in Neosho Missouri for the fall semester and then Anne Arundel Community Colege for the spring semester, and then transfer to Virginia Tech in fall of 2009. But I was talking to a friend the other day, and she said that she doesn't think that VT or any other school would accept me if I went to two different community colleges in one year. I graduated high school with straight A's and a 4.0 GPA, I am a very hardworking and studious student.… [cont.]

A. You need to talk with an adviser at VT. The problem with community colleges is that there is a chance your classes won't transfer to the 4 year unless you get an associates degree. You also want to make sure you are taking the classes you need. The community colleges might have a program for your particular major, but the courses might be completely different at VT. Make sure you talk to someone there so you're not wasting your time and money in classes that won't transfer or that you didn't need in the first place. The two different schools shouldn't matter. They just look at the courses, credit hours, and GPA.
