The team is a founding member of MLS (1996), but has gone through several name changes. The team was originally known as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars through 1997. From the 1998 season until right before the 2006 season, the team was known as simply the MetroStars, though 'NY/NJ' continued to be displayed on the MLS Website in reference to the team through the early 2000s. On March 9, 2006, it was sold to Red Bull GmbH, and the name of the organization was changed to Red Bull New York while the playing team was to be called the New York Red Bulls, because they are located in the New York metropolitan area.[1]
