Rochelle Park is a township A township, in the context of New Jersey local government, refers to one of five types and one of eleven forms of municipal government. As of the United States 2000 Census The Twenty-Second United States Census, known as Census 2000 and conducted by the Census Bureau, determined the resident population of the United States on April 1, 2000, to be 281,421,906, an increase of 13.2% over the 248,709,873 persons enumerated during the 1990 Census. This was the twenty-second federal census and the largest single civil, the township population was 5,528.
What is now Rochelle Park was incorporated as Midland Township on March 7, 1871, from portions of New Barbadoes Township. Rochelle Park was formed as a township by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature The New Jersey Legislature is the legislative branch of the government of the U.S. state of New Jersey. In its current form, as defined by the New Jersey Constitution of 1947, the Legislature consists of two houses: the General Assembly and the Senate. The Legislature meets in the New Jersey State House, in the state capital of Trenton on November 5, 1929, replacing Midland Township, based on the results of a referendum held on that same day that passed by a 503-69 margin.[7] The main impetus behind the change in name was to avoid confusion with the nearby community of Midland Park.[8]
