Where did the origin of Santa Claus come from? When did people first start to celebrate Christmas?
Q. Christmas was supposedly a day created to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Where did the origin/idea of Santa Claus come from? Where did the idea to give gifts on Christmas come from? Why do we put up Christmas trees? Where did the idea to decorate trees and houses with lights, garlands, etc. come from? When did people first start to celebrate Christmas? How long has Christmas celebrations went on throughout history? Why did people decide that December 25th should be the day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ? The Bible has no specific date on when Jesus Christ was born, so why December 25th?

A. "Santa Claus" comes from the Dutch (Sinterklaas / Sinter Claes) Dec 25th was picked because the Catholic Church needed converts, so they picked a day that was already celebrated by many pagans. Read this for answers to all your questions

What is the difference between God and Santa Claus that most people still believe in God but not Santa?
Q. I mean, the Santa Claus character is close enough to the God character, he gives the good presents and gives the bad coal. Apart from the fact that Santa makes a helluva lot more movies than God, I don't really see any difference between the two. So how come people believe in God but not Santa? Same question goes for every other religion.

How come most human adults don't believe in Santa Claus and things that are too fantastical?
Q. I'm talking more about fairy tale stuff, like really fantastical stuff. If we stopped growing and developing at the age of say, 7 or 8, what would this world be like? Why do adults seem to have enough understanding to understand that Santa Claus is not real by the age of 13, 15, and especially 20, but not when they're 6.

A. Questioning the validity of a statement isn't a virtue of most children. They have what is called a tabla rasa at birth, which means blank slate in Latin. This blank slate is easily impressed by everything, even mathematics, color differentiation, and can't question what it's being taught, till it has learned the basics of how language represents actual events. Children usually believe everything they hear till adolescence when they start questioning the norms, and rebel, as teenagers do. The fantastical idea of Santa can be believed in till the person reads up on Santa, or realizes the person behind the beer breath, and white beard is uncle Joe. Its all about understanding the difference between the imaginary and the real. Children live… [cont.]

A. We just had to tell my 10 year old son a few weeks ago cause he said all the kids in his class were telling him he is not real and he wanted to know. We told him that he was real at one point in time (St. Nicolas) and told him the whole story of the real St. Nick. We told him that to continue the great things that St. Nick had started Santa was created and now Santa is in all of us. We are now letting him play Santa to his little sister this year, letting him stay up later and eat cookies and stuff. He was sad about it, but he understands why we carried on such a great tradition that was started many many years ago.

What should be a FEE SCHEDULE for myself to appear as SANTA CLAUS?
Q. I am planning to appear in my area as santa claus during the upcoming Christmas season. I did appear as Santa (three times) earlier years, without any fee schedule. - I did accept "random gratuitous-amounts" from friends who I visited. I'm wondering what is "the going rate" for Santa-appearances to business parties, group celebrations, or private (family) festivities.
Asked by chasvanblom - Mon Sep 28 00:28:19 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's going to vary by region, but a good place to get an answer is ClausNet.com, THE online community for Santa, Mrs. Claus, Elves and Reindeer Handlers. Such topics are not well-discussed in such a public forum as this. But, another way to make a decision is to look at other entertainer's rates in your area: magicians, balloon artists, etc.

How old were you when you found out the truth about Santa Claus?
Q. And how did you find out or who told you? I was in 3rd grade and I asked my friend about Santa Claus and he told me there was no Santa Clause. I didn't want to believe him so I kinda forced myself into still believing. Even though deep down, I knew the real truth.

A. 2nd grade...although the "truth" was a bit altered. Our 2nd grade teacher told us that Santa was really Satan (just move a couple of letters),and that's why he wore red. Also to take away the true meaning of Christmas and cloud our minds with presents. This all just the day before Christmas break. Oh those nutty midwestern teachers from the early 70's.

How do my parents go about telling my sister that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, & the Tooth Fairy arent real?
Q. I need a way for my parents to tell, or even hint, to my little sister that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy are not real. She really believes they are real despite the other kids' opinions on this issue at school. She's 10 years old and will be 11 in a couple months. Should they wait to tell her or should they tell her now? I would appreciate ANY suggestions that you guys have. Thank you so much.

A. I would let her find out on her own. I'm sure she is smart and she will figure it out. A really great way if they feel the need to tell her is to do what a friend's parents did they told him "Honey I think its about time we showed you Santa Clause" Then the parents and the child put together a box for a needy family. They drive to the house, leave the "goodies' on the porch, They then say "Congratulations - Santa" Or there is also a wonderful little book call Christmas Socks by Andy Andrews. It would make a wonderful gift for her

Does anyone else see a sort of analogy in santa claus and going to heaven ?
Q. With santa claus it's more on the line for children that if you're good at the end of the year you get a gift (reward) where as with heaven both children and adults desire this (eternal life) if your good and righteous you'd go to heaven when you die. I'm probably incorrect about this some way so feel free to correct, but it's just been something on my mind for quiet a while.

How old is too old for a dog or cat to still believe in Santa Claus?
Q. My wife takes our dog to Petco to get his photo taken with Santa each year, but he's getting much older now and in the most recent pic, I can swear, there's a look of incredulity in my dog's eyes as he's sitting there on Santa's lap. At what age, typically, do dogs and cats stop believing in Santa Claus? Should we start labeling his gifts "From Mommy and Daddy" instead of "From Santa"?

A. That's one of the good things about dogs and cats. Just like some people, they're never too old to believe in Santa Claus. It's just that your dog has caught on to the idea that this is not the REAL Santa Claus. Your dog should receive a present labeled from "Mommy and Daddy" and from "Santa" because he has been a very good dog this year. Santa told me so.
