How safe is Varese, Italy?
Q. This may be a stupid/irrelevant question, but I was wondering, how safe is Varese generally considered to be in terms of street crime? Obviously, everywhere has crime, but in general, does Varese tend to be fairly free of street crime such as mugging, random assualts, etc? Thanks

A. Well, seemingly speaking about Italy the first topic to face is "how safe", the crime rate and the number of muggings. I suppose no Italians thinking about Exeter or Cheltenham would ask at first how many random assaults there are. Never mind... Varese is a middle-small city with not particular features. Crime is really not a problem - ugliness perhaps.

Travel to Varese Italy?
Q. I will be at Bellagio Hotel (Lake Como) and wish to travel down to visit relatives in Varese on a weekday. Is hiring a car my only option?

A. Bellagio doesn't have a train station, but you could take the short boat trip to Varenna and catch a train to Monza. From there, change to a train to the Milan P. Garibaldi station, and another train to Varese. The total train travel is roughly 3 hours and costs 8.55 euro (2nd class). There is also a train connection between Como and Varese - you could take the boat (or SPT bus) from Bellagio to Como. From the Como San Giovanni station there are frequent trains that will take you to the Milan P. Garibaldi station where you can get a train to Varese. The train trip is about 2 hours and costs 6.75 euro. You can check specific schedules and prices at: A 2nd train option exists from Como: you can take a Ferrovie Nord to Varese Nord with… [cont.]

What is Varese, Italy like?
Q. Does the town have any qualities which would merit taking a visit, or is it just a pretty standard Northern Italian town? Thanks

A. is like a pretty standard northern italian town... you can find a lot of pretty standard southerns italian towns too, plenty of them a lot with medieval centre very cute and lively, with nice coastline and full of people. Varese it would be a bit "cold" in term of weather and people and bit boring like switzerland

Honeymoon accommodation in Milan, Florence, Rome, and West Coast of Italy. Any suggestions?
Q. We are flying into Milan, and spending a few days there, going North to Varese to see friends (while we stay in Milan) but we would also like to go (probably by train) to Florence, and Rome. (Or if you have alternative suggestions we shouldn't miss, then please say so) We will use B & B Self catering hotels or whatever. We will be going in April or May. Not quite decided yet. Thank you in advance

A. If you go to both Florence and Rome you will spend an awful lot of time travelling and as there is lots to see in both you might find yourself worn out with cities. I have two suggestions for you Plan 1 - stay in the North of Italy, go from Milan to Verona which is a nice little town and from there take trips to Venice, Lake Garda which is wonderful to explore and other small towns such as Vicenza if you like Architecture. There are lots of small towns in Lombardy and the Veneto which are really good. Plan 2 - From Milan, I would probably opt for Florence. Apart from the city itself there are lots of other smaller places to visit such as Lucca. From there you could travel to La Spezia and onto the Cinque Terre, 5 small villages on the… [cont.]
