Africa is the world's second largest and second most populous continent, after Asia. At about 30.2 million km² (11.7 million sq mi) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area. With 1.0 billion people (as of 2009, see table) in 65 territories (including 54 recognized states), it accounts for about 14.72% of the world's human population. The continent is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, both the Suez Canal and the Red Sea along the Sinai Peninsula to the northeast, the Indian Ocean to the southeast, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The continent includes Madagascar and various archipelagoes and has 54 sovereign states ("countries") and two states with limited recognition. Africa, particularly central Eastern Africa, is widely regarded within the scientific community to be the origin of humans and the Hominidae clade (great apes), as evidenced by the discovery of the earliest hominids and their ancestors, as well as later ones that have been dated to around seven million years ago – including Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Australopithecus africanus, A. afarensis, Homo erectus, H. habilis and H. ergaster – with the earliest Homo sapiens (modern human) found in Ethiopia being dated to circa 200,000 years ago. Africa straddles the equator and encompasses numerous climate areas; it is the only continent to stretch from the northern temperate to southern temperate zones. The African expected economic growth rate is at about 5.0% for 2010 and 5.5% in 2011. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Even the 2 countries that are basically INSIDE of South Africa - Lesotho and Swaziland - are uncivilized. South Africa also has equal rights for LGBT, which is a huge step, while the rest of Africa basically bans homosexuality and many countries use the death penalty against homosexuals. How did South Africa seemingly rapidly industrialize compared to the rest of Africa? There's not even any "civilized" countries anywhere around them. Asked by Masta P - Mon Feb 16 17:32:19 2009 - Other - Society & Culture - 5 Answers - 2 Comments A. Well cape town was the first colony the British had in Africa, and it worked hard to keep it and develop it as it was a key port town. So Britain poured a lot of effort into stabilising it and industrialising it, and formed a country that could look after itself, so when it declared independence it could stand on it's own two feet, whereas other African colony's asked for independence when they had only just started with government, and therfore encountered corruption amongst other problems. Since the 1950's, South Africa has been able to capatalise on it's huge diamond mine resources to provide huge industrialisation. Lesotho and Swaziland are basically the lands granted to tribes of South Africa, but are civilised; they have good morals,… [cont.] Answered by Adam - Mon Feb 16 19:24:22 2009 What is the safest and friendliest country in Africa to visit?

Morocco recently dropped due to the mistreatment of women. Because it is muslim denominated, they have been reports on the maltreatment of women. ghana has also gone down the line due to corruption and too many crooks. starting with the regions, Southern African was voted for safest because most of the safe countries are in Southern Africa.
