Alveolar

An alveolus (plural: alveoli, from Latin alveolus, "little cavity") is an anatomical structure that has the form of a hollow cavity. Found in the lung parenchyma, the pulmonary alveoli are the dead ends of the respiratory tree, which outcrop from either alveolar sacs or alveolar ducts, which are both sites of gas exchange with the blood as well. Alveoli are particular to mammalian lungs. Different structures are involved in gas exchange in other vertebrates. The alveolar membrane is the gas-exchange surface. The blood brings carbon dioxide from the rest of the body for release into the alveoli, and the oxygen in the alveoli is taken up by the blood in the alveolar blood vessels, to be transported to all the cells in the body.

Contents

Location

The alveoli are located in the respiratory zone of the lungs, at the distal termination of the alveolar ducts and atria. These air sacs are the forming and termination point of the respiratory tract. They provide total surface area of about 100 m.

Q. Describe one adaptation of the alveolar epithelium which allows efficient diffusion?

A. When it comes to efficient diffusion,it relates to Fick's Law of diffusion. surface area x diffusion --- respiratory membrane thickness 1.Surface area :Each lung contains more than 300 million aveoli. It provides a large internal surface area the approximate size of a tennis court.Imagine that there are two apparatus which contain 100ml water are exposing under blazing hot sun for 3 hours.A( 20cm2 surface area ) and B ( 5cm2 surface area) exposing.Which one will undergoing more evaporation? Answer=A.Same goes to the alveolar. Large surface area assistants in diffusion. 2.Diffusion gradient:When the partial pressure of gas is greater at A side then B side, the gas will diffuse from A to B.The partial pressure of O2 is… [cont.]

What are the consequences of damaged alveolar sacs?
Q. What are the consequences of damaged alveolar sacs?
Asked by laura - Sun Mar 14 12:20:06 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. When alveoli are damaged, the lungs become filled with large spaces which are widely separated from the blood capillaries, therefore the total surface area for gas exchange is greatly reduced and people suffering from this often have trouble getting enough oxygen into their blood, which can lead to trouble with the heart as its muscles require oxygen as part of respiration to contract, heart muscle deprived of oxygen can die.

This reference surveys current best practices in the prevention and management of ventilator-indu ced lung injury (VILI) and spans the many pathways and mechanisms of VILI including cell injury and repair, the modulation of alveolar-capill ary barrier properties, and lung and systemic inflammatory consequences of injurous mechanical ventilation. Considering many emerging therapeutic options, this guide also reviews the wide array of clinical studies on lung protection strategies and approaches to ARDS patients at risk for VILI.
