How do I find out who owns a domain name?
Q. I want to buy a certain domain name to put up a website. The domain name isn't used, but it unavailable. How do i find out who owns it?
Asked by Ben M - Fri Nov 14 03:24:19 2008 - Other - Internet - 7 Answers - 1 Comments
A. To find the owner of any domain, the first step is to go to a whois site. 1) 2) Input the domain in the 'WHOIS Lookup' section 3) You will generally see the owner of the domain under 'Registrant','Administrative Contact', or 'Technical Contact'. *Sometimes domain owners have hidden their names by purchasing extra privacy options. In a case like this, they generally will have a made up name and company, BUT you will see a masked email address. This masked email address will not be the owners actual email address, but will forward to the owner. If you need additional help or questions please feel free to contact me as I own a domain company and work with similar matters often.

How important is a top level domain name relatively to a subdomain when creating a website?
Q. From SEO point of view, how much does it matter if I purchase a new domain name for each website or I create all my websites as subdomains, when creating a subdomain I can target a specific keyword, without worrying about it not being free!
Asked by GP - Sat Oct 1 15:07:10 2011 - Search Engine Optimization - 2 Answers - Comments
A. Search engines treat subdomains as separate domains. Example: any CMS - wordpress, joomla - where each hosted blog is a subdomain which is obviously treated differently: your blog on gadgets is streated as blog on gadgets (granted that you SEO it well) and another blog on the same CMS will be treated as blog about "widgets" So subdomain is not a bad option, especially if you are budget conscious.

How do you put two names as owner of a domain name?
Q. Me and a partner are buying a domain name of value. I want to know how, after we have both paid half and half for it, how do we list BOTH our names as owners of this domain? Thanks.
Asked by Seven - Wed Nov 16 03:16:49 2011 - Programming & Design - 1 Answers - Comments
A. the WHOIS database normally only supports a single name and or Business name. My suggestion would be to register the name under a business, that both of you would have a 50/50 ownership . Officially it would be owned by the company and you can put each others information under the admin/tech/billing sections. The person who would be listed as the "owner" then becomes only the person who processed the transaction. I have some partnerships and do the same thing so I can buy domains where they have restrictions.

A. I don't think you can register a domain to two individuals. You should use a trading name and use that - ie. whatever name you plan to trade under. You don't have to formally register the name as long as you are happy to trade as a partnership rather than a limited liability company. Whatever name you choose, that's the name to register the domain with - you should think about drawing up a document which you both sign to say that you paid equal halves to purchase the domain - both keep a copy, and you are sorted...

If you sell a domain name you have owned for 13 years do you pay capital gains taxes on thoses monies?
Q. If not what taxes would you pay and if you sell the domain next year (2008) are you exempt from CGT under the rule that if you fall into the 10% to !5% tax bracket you pay no CGT in 2008. This would be in the United States. Obviously we would make a profit from the sale of the domain name.

A. It's an asset, so yes, any gain is capital gain. Yes, it's possible that if your taxable income is small enough, some of the gain will be taxed at 0% in 2008.

I have a domain name and unused hosting. What's a good business idea for an online business?
Q. I have a very catchy domain name, and a hosting server laying around for about a year now. I want to start some type of online business, but I'm only sixteen. What I want to start is a business that will get me some money in my pockets, not a billionaire. What are some good ideas I should start? I've tried selling my things on ebay, but that's not really what I want to do. I want to provide a service, or anything on my website to make money.

A. Hello, First check at following: 1. Name of ICANN Registrar 2. Details in Admin Contact details If admin contact details are yours, then approach Registrar directly and ask them to provide you control panel. They will help you for gain control on domain name. If admin details are not yours, then it is bit difficult for you to prove that domain is owned by you. Still contact registrar and ask if they can help you in this matter. They may ask you to provide few legal documentation and some other proof to give you the control of domain. Regards, Vinay

What are the differences between different Domain name registrars?
Q. Why do i have to pay 10 dollars per year at yahoo and 3 dollars at some other company, for a domain name? It's just the domain name right? i'm not talking about email or hosting services. When you register a domain name www.something.com You get the same thing at every company, right? so what does it matter if i get it at yahoo or at whatever place else? Also, is it maybe so that you can't get email and hosting at a registrar if you didn't get the domain name from them?

How can I start my own real website with a domain name, when I don't know anything about web hosting?
Q. Can anyone give me a little know-how about starting up a website? Perhaps some step-by-step about how to go from knowing nothing about this, to running a website? Some of the terms I've heard associated with this were My SQL and c Panel (I think). Does anyone know what these terms mean? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot!

A. Step 1: Register your domain name. You can register a domain name at yahoo or at godaddy.com. Step 2: Get web hosting. YOu can get web hosting thru Yahoo or Godaddy, or a gazillion other web hosting companies on line. You will likely only need a teeny bit of disk space for your site, but you may want to make sure you have at least 500mb of space so that you have enough room to have email accounts associated with your website/domain. Get a UNIX/Red Hat/Linux/Apache type account. You don't need to pay for "windows" hosting. You should pay between $7 and $20 per month for hosting... less, and you don't know what kind of customer service you are going to get, more, and you are paying too much. Step 3: Go to the place where you… [cont.]
