People who have read Arrian...............?
Q. Please Only answer if you have read Arrian How far do you think Alexander could have conquered, he planned to defeat Arabia, Then from there Carthage, then defeat the Romans and then the Northern Germanic tribes. He had a huge amount of wealth and never lost a battle, Had Alexander lived, do you think Alexander would have been able to conquer everything he put his mind to, or do you think he would have met his match somewhere in the world and be unable to defeat them?

A. Being decidedly pro-Alexander, Arrian makes very little of the mutiny in India. Throughout his campaigns Alexander relied on the Macedonian method of fighting in phalanx formation, aided by heavy cavalry. His potential expansion would be limited (as it was in India) by how far he could convince his men to go. It is also dangerous to say that he never lost a battle - we only have what is written for evidence, and the likes of Ptolemy who sought to elevate Alexander to an almost god-like status may well have chosen to report only his successes. Militarily speaking, had Alexander been able to persuade his army to travel to all the locations mentioned, I think that there is a good chance he would have been able to defeat those enemies who… [cont.]

Roman names--which do you prefer (plus BQ)?
Q. I love history, and enjoy discovering names that were used in various cultures and time periods. That being said, I've compiled a list of names taken from Ancient Rome. While some of these are, shall we say, odd, I would like you to choose one name from each PAIR of names; if you don't like either, still list the name you can tolerate more. Remember, this is just for FUN, and I do give out best answer! A. Hehe, I teach Classical languages and history! This should be fun. Antonia Caledonia (though I think only of the famous hunt) Bellona (an inauspicious name for a child) Camilla (though I do like Cornelia) Laelia Ceres (I'm not fond of either) Domitia Lucia Marcella (neither is for me) Venita Octavia (I like this one) Natalia Pomona Porcia (I don't care for either) Silvia (My favorite girl's name!) Vesta Maximillian (I like Arrian, but it's a bit too similar to Aryan) Atticus (great name) Burrus (neither is for me. Burrus makes me think of burrows, Crispus is too close to "crispy".) Caius Fabian (I'm curious about Cheston. Ch isn't a native Latin sound--if it appears in Latin it is pronounced as a K, and -on is a Greek ending.… [cont.]

I have a gargantuan superiority complex.?
Q. I tend to consider myself superior to others, even my best friends, because I wear tailored suits and have better taste in ties than they do. I get extremely resentful when people don't pay as much attention to me as others whose families are obviously not as wealthy as me. Their total lack of candour in wearing suits, 'borrowing' money off their parents to go out, driving crap cars and having jobs at 17 to pay for their surplus expenses makes me extremely angry. I should be the centre of attention, I am far richer than them, I am far more intelligent having read practically every classic of classical antiquity from Arrian to Xenophon, I have far better taste in restaurants and nights out and I am generally a better human being than they… [cont.]

was King Darius really as pathetic as Arrian makes him out to be?
Q. i think that Arrian just loved Alexander (..The Great) and so wanted to show him as a brave noble hero...was he really in your opinion??

A. The victors write history. They also kill people that write the "wrong" history if you happened to be living under Alexander's heel. Arrian may just have been building Alexander up so as not to get lynched. You expect a guy that slaughters whole cities that don't submit to his rule to be nice?

A. You messed up big time. Zac found a different side to you, a cruel and mean side. You need to just say your sorry, if you mean it truly, and let him have his space to find out if your worth being friends with again or not. Do not get too worked up if he doesn't speak to you again, most likely he will not. It was pretty immature and shallow what you did. Be seeing you...

Why did these historians, contemporaries of jesus, not write of him?
Q. We are talking about a "miracle working son of god" so don't bother comparing his historicity to any other historical figure. Consider the following list. These are the historians and writers who DID live within Christ's alleged lifetime or within a very short period after his death, yet not a one of them mentio jesus, his "miracles", his birth or ressurection. Apollonius Persius Appian Petronius Arrian Phaedrus Aulus Gellius Philo-Judaeus Columella Phlegon Damis Pliny the Elder Dio Chrysostom Pliny the Younger Dion Pruseus Plutarch Epictetus Pompon Mela Favorinus Ptolemy Florus Lucius Quintilian Hermogones Quintius Curtius Josephus Seneca Justus of Tiberius Silius Italicus Juvenal Statius Lucanus Suetonius Lucian… [cont.]

A. Josephus Flavius DID refer to Christ if you are looking for a specific name fit for your list. I am not particularly knowledgeable about apologetics, yet I can find this reference with a momentary web search. The writers of the New Testament were, in many instances, martyrs for their faith. Their prolific writings exist although you appear to be able to completely disregard the Bible as a historical source. Why would these eye witness observers die for fiction? These writers also took the subversive actions of writing to women and slaves rather than pandering only to men which would hardly have made their writings popular according to the culture. Yet we still have these writings preserved and available. I cannot prove the existence of… [cont.]

A. This is an very interesting question. It would take a lifetime of study and research to cover the writings of all listed. This is one document I have always fond historically correct concerning Christians. In my opinion, there is little doubt that Jesus was an actual person. To believe or not believe He was divine is a matter of faith. This is from the writings of Tacitus documenting events that took place after Rome burned. A. Arianism is a Christological view originally held by followers of Arius, a Christian priest who lived and taught in Alexandria, Egypt, in the early 4th century. Arius taught that God the Father and the Son were not co-eternal, seeing the pre-incarnate Jesus as a divine being but nonetheless created by (and consequently inferior to) the Father at some point, before which the Son did not exist. In English-language works, it is sometimes said that Arians believe that Jesus is or was a "creature"; in this context, the word is being used in its original sense of "created being". With the exception of perhaps the Protestant Reformation, the various disagreements within the Christian Church have not held the same force and… [cont.]
