Q. It appears that a bachelor degree is not enough anymore to guarantee a permanent job with benefits and sustainable wage. There is even more uncertainty with a graduate degree. Are institutions too generous in awarding degrees? Are there too many colleges today? Too many online programs? Receiving a bachelor degree used to be an elite achievement but now is seems like they are too readily available. Asked by Andre - Sun Oct 14 20:59:27 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. While there may well be some issue with availability increasing the number of people with a degree, a bigger part of what has caused this is that more and more jobs in 2007 require a college education than did in 1951. There has also been a change in the corporate culture that you're alluding to. In 1951, you went to work down at the XYZ Company and you stayed at the XYZ Company through your whole career. These days, we don't do that. We look around on occasion and see if ABC Almagamated will offer us a better job with more pay - we move about far more often than our grandparents did. XYZ Company and ABC Almagamated know this - since we workers aren't committed to them, they are equally less committed to we workers. I'm thinking about becoming a nurse (RN), but was wondering what kind of education is needed? I have a Bachelor in Sociology. I'm not sure what area specifically I'd like to work in but somewhere along the lines of the ER or in the pediatrics department of the hospital. Does my Sociology degree give me a step up or do I have to start all over and get a BA in nursing? Asked by shelly39280 - Mon Apr 14 23:58:26 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm working on my BSN(bachelor of science in nursing), and some of the prerequisite classes i took were either directly related to sociology or was a branch of sociology. So you probably have some classes out of the way. I imagine you will need about a year to finish up your pre-reqs before you can apply for a program. Then once you get out of school you can request to work in a certain area or field and get specific training. Good Luck! Q. I am about to graduate with a bachelor's degree in psychology. At first i was really set on teaching but i think i would rather go into psychology but i wanted to know where i should look for jobs so that i can gain experience while i get my master's degree man, with the answers i am getting, they are all great don't get me wrong, but teaching is sounding sooo much better! Asked by baroness - Sun May 10 22:16:23 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Unfortunately, there is not much value in a master's degree in psychology. It will qualify you to teach psychology at community colleges, but it won't help for any professional positions you might apply for, and you can't become a counselor with it; you'd need to get a doctorate to practice or become licensed. So make sure a master's is really worthwhile before you get it. With just a bachelor's degree in psychology, you can go many places. Human services occupations, human resources, analysis, etc. If you specifically want to counsel, look into getting a job that will lead to an MSW rather than an MA or MS.
