Biology

Biology is a natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms, including their structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, distribution, and taxonomy. Biology is a vast subject containing many subdivisions, topics, and disciplines. Among the most important topics are five unifying principles that can be said to be the fundamental axioms of modern biology:

  1. Cells are the basic unit of life
  2. New species and inherited traits are the product of evolution
  3. Genes are the basic unit of heredity
  4. An organism regulates its internal environment to maintain a stable and constant condition
  5. Living organisms consume and transform energy.

Subdisciplines of biology are recognized on the basis of the scale at which organisms are studied and the methods used to study them: biochemistry examines the rudimentary chemistry of life; molecular biology studies the complex interactions of systems of biological molecules; cellular biology examines the basic building block of all life, the cell; physiology examines the physical and chemical functions of the tissues, organs, and organ systems of an organism; and ecology examines how various organisms interact and associate with their environment.

The object of these prizes is to stimulate and encourage original investigation by the aid of the microscope in the biology of North America, and, while the competition is open to all, it is especially commended to advanced students in biology in such of our universities and colleges as furnish opportunity for suitable work.
  3. The structure, function, and behavior of an organism or type of organism.

What is the difference between cell/developmental biology and biochemistry?
Q. I'm currently studying Molecular Biology at a University. They offer two tracks that someone with this major can take. Namely, they are cell/developmental biology or biochemistry. What are the differences between these two types of biological study? My interests lie in genetics, epigenetics, stem cells, and the biological "switches" found in junk DNA. With these interests, which track do you think I should take?

A. One is about development and the other about chemistry.

Q. How do the small ears of a polar bear help it to survive? Also, what is in their mother's milk that helps to keep them warm as babies?

A. Since polar bears live in cold climates, hence they have evolved mechanisms to conserve the heat loss from their body. For instance they have a thick fur to conserve heat loss through the body, for the same reason they have smaller ears (notice sometimes how your ears turn red when you blush, or after a hot bath). Mother's milk doesn't have anything special to keep them special. However polar animals have higher amounts on brown fat that keeps their body temperatures constant my uncoupling the reactions in the body that create ATP thereby releasing energy.

This introductory biology text helps you learn the process of science and basic biological principles while encouraging you to think about critical issues. New "Take Home Messages" help you grasp key concepts while special features like the chapter opening case studies and "How Would You Vote?" questions make the material come to life. New "Figure It Out" questions in many illustrations help you understand the concepts communicated in the figures and the new Data Analysis Activities at the end of every chapter strengthen your analytical skills. This book has been widely praised for clear and engaging writing, art with step-by-step callouts, and terrific support from student media that all work together to help you "get" biology.
