What chess board material matches with ebony pieces?
Q. I recently purchased a chess set from House of Staunton. The pieces are made of ebony (black) and boxwood (white). I'm having a tough time figuring out what type of wood will look good with the pieces. Do I want an ebony board as well so both the board and pieces will be black and white? Will a walnut and maple board look okay? Thanks!

A. IMO, walnut and maple isn't the best combination for your set. Ebony boards would work well, but if your board matches your set exactly, sometimes the pieces get "lost" on the board.. I bought a ebony & boxwood set from House of Staunton years ago. The board I bought to go with the set was a folding board that looked like this one: It goes well with the chessmen, and pieces never get "lost" (which is important when calculating!). House of Staunton makes excellent chess equipment for the price, so I'm sure you'll enjoy your set.

How do you get finishing nails out of a board?
Q. The nails are countersunk in the board on the top and bent on the bottom. The boards were against the wall. The nails bent when I pulled the boards off. Now I need to put the boards back on.
Asked by H - Sat Feb 3 14:34:29 2007 - Maintenance & Repairs - 7 Answers - Comments
A. pull out from the side of the board that won't be seen when you rehang it. I'm gonna guess and say the bent side, when you reinstall your trim just go with the next size finish nail.

What is the proper way to denote I am on the board of directors in an email signature?
Q. I see con's to all the possibilities I've come up with: Chris Duncan Director Smith Widgets, Inc. gives appearance there is only one director in Smith Widgets Chris Duncan Director of the Board Smith Widgets, Inc. could be misconstrued to mean the board has exactly one director and several other titled positions. Chris Duncan Board of Directors Smith Widgets, Inc. is not a title. Chris Duncan Member Board of Directors Smith Widgets unnecessarily long. So does anyone know the proper way to indicate I am one of 5 of the Board of Directors?

A. Chris Duncan Member of Board of Directors Smith Widgets, Inc. Chris Duncan Member, Board of Directors Smith Widgets, Inc. Either one should work fine. See the example below. If you are chairman of the board, you can include that as part of your title; e.g. Chairman of Board of Directors, and it will be apparent that you head the group.

Q. Hi all, my son is 16 years old, hes left school and is waiting to hear about either a full time plumbing course or an apprentiship in plumbing through college. If he gets the apprentiship its about PS50 per week wages. Do i charge him board? I just want to be fair and for him to understand he has to pay his way in life. I live in Yorkshire, England and wondered how much others pay to give me an idea in general, as one day he will be working full time and i need to know for then.

How is a non profit board suppose to be set up?

There is a disagreement among board members as to what we are considered. What state office would verify this? Is a controlling board suppose to be chosen by its members not by the board itself? An advisory board can be set up that way but a controlling board? We do not have any pass records stating this to are knowledge. A. If the organization is incorporated, the by-laws of the organization should provide you with the necessary guidance regarding the status of your board. From your question, it sounds like the organization may not be formally incorporated. It may be an informal association. If you are not incorporated, it really doesn't matter what type of Board you have - "advisory" or "controlling". You're correct, in most cases, an Advisory Board does not have the same legal liablity as a governing board, however, it also does not have the same legal authority as the governing board. How to get started in board game industry?
Q. Quite simply, I like playing board games. It's what I did growing up. It's what I do with my friends now. I'd like to work on designing board games / card games / party games. How can I find an entry level position in the board game/toy industry, working on concept, development, and overall game designe (or working toward that end)? I graduated in 2005 with Journalism and Philosophy bachelor's degrees. I currently work in televison, with no professional board game design experience. Please note: I'm not asking about video game design or software development, unless that's a path to board game work.

A. A great place to ask this question would be Boardgamegeek.com. That is, hands down, the place to go if you are in to boardgames. Let me tell you though, being a boardgame designer is a little like wanting to be an artist. It might make you happy, but it's unlikely to earn you a living. Not that you can't do it, but there are a lot of talented boardgame designers out there who are barely making a living at it, or doing it as a hobby and still have a real job as well. Still, if this is something that you're passionate about, give it a a shot. You might be able to do something with it.

How do i remove cement board from the top of ceramic tile?
Q. I have a ceramic tile floor that has cement board adhered to the top of it, with carpet glued to the cement board. I have removed the carpet, and now i want to remove the cement board to reveal the tile underneath. Any suggestions on how to removed the cement board?

A. Cement board may be glued or screwed down with tapco screws, if screwed you may be able to unscrew it if glued you could chip it off, but that ceramic floor won't be in good shape, so installation of new floor will be necessary and that's your choice.

What is the sanding board for in a prisma set?
Q. I recently got this primsacolor premier graphite drawing set. I love it to death! But there is a sanding board in it and I'm not sure what it is used for. Theres a sharpener in it too so I doubt it's for sharpening my pencils. Can anyone tell me what the sanding board is used for?
Asked by Jenny_Penny - Fri Nov 13 22:09:26 2009 - Drawing & Illustration - 1 Answers - Comments
A. Actually it is for sharpening your pencils. If you want a very fine point, you either have to continuously sharpen your pencils, which will grind them away to nothing in no time, or you can sharpen the point when it starts to get dull by using the sanding board, which will put a point on your pencil without eating it away to quickly. That way you only have to sharpen when there is little left of the lead. Not to mention that if you use the sharpener all the time to get a fine point, there's a good chance that the lead will break and you'll have to keep sharpening.

what is the best way to cut masonite board?
Q. I need to cut as straight as possible this Masonite board that was once an a door. My 18 volt saw keeps getting stuck and the board wobbles like crazy since I do not have any saw horses. A. Lay it flat on the ground and support it with 2x4s or whatever size wood you have handy as long as they're the same dimension. Adjust the saw blade so that you have just enough exposed to cut the Masonite. Either lay the boards parallel with the cut or crosswise if you don't mind cutting into the surface of the supporting wood.

Can particle board flooring in a mobile home go from swollen back to almost normal?
Q. My father lives in a 1998 mobile home. His air conditioner drain pipe clogged up and water was leaking under the vinyl flooring for quite a while before I noticed the floor was swollen up. His unit has been replaced so there hopefully will be no more leaking water. Now that the particle board is swollen up, must it be replaced with new board or will it ever dry back out and go back down some? How big a deal is this going to be?
Asked by vlschlagal - Sat Jun 21 20:57:51 2008 - Maintenance & Repairs - 10 Answers - Comments
A. the flooring will not look the same nor will it ever be as strong. It will need to be replaced. Many contractors will splice the sub floor on a joist. this is a poor practice it is better to cut between the joists and glue and screw a 6" wide backer across the joint around the entire perimeter. The original sheets of particle board extend from side to side and are joined over the top of the floor joist with a 4" inch backer full glued and stapled many many times.

How to remove cork board from the wall?
Q. When we moved into the new house one of the rooms had a cork board wall. My sister and I now are getting our own rooms and I don't like the cork board so I want to remove out. Any suggestions on how to. (its not one large piece of cork board its about 108 pieces of cork board that are 1ft by 1ft) I meant remove it. also there definetly is a wall behind it. If I look closley I can see that behind the cork is the wall that is the same color as the rest of the room.

A. The cork tiles are glued directly to the wall. I would use a wonder bar or flat bar and scrape the majority of it off the wall. Then I would use a wall paper scraper to remove the excess cork and glue. One problem may be the glue residue that does not remove easily. You may have to skim the wall with joint compound, sand and texture to match the other walls. Good luck

How do I find the minimum angle a board can have without slipping, using the coefficient of static friction?
Q. A board (whose mass is 40 kg and length is 3m) leans against a wall. The wall is frictionless but the coefficient of friction between the board and floor is 0.12. What is the minimum angle that the board can have without slipping (in degress)? What is the magnitude of the force exerted on the floor by the board?

A. To answer this question, you have to consider both the forces and the torques acting on the board. For reference, let's say the wall is on the right side, so the board is leaning toward the right. Define some variables: L = length of board m = mass of board m = coefficient of friction th = angle at which slippage occurs Nf = normal force exerted by floar (upwards against board) Nw = normal force exerted by wall (leftwards against board) Ff = force of friction exerted by floor, just before slippage. First, consider the forces. Since the board is not (yet) moving, all the forces should cancel out. In particular, all the horizontal forces must cancel out; and all the vertical forces must cancel out. Horizontal forces: --- 1. normal force of… [cont.]
