Personal armor is a type of light armor used to protect police forces, private citizens and private security guards or bodyguards, whereas hard-plate reinforced vests are mainly worn by combat soldiers, police tactical units and hostage rescue teams.

History

Greek Mycenaean 1400 BC armor.

Many factors have affected the development of personal armor throughout human history. Significant factors in the development of armor include the economic and technological necessities of armor production. For instance plate armor first appeared in Medieval Europe when water-powered trip hammers made the formation of plates faster and cheaper. Also modern militaries usually do not provide the best armor to their forces since doing so would be prohibitively costly. At times the development of armor has run parallel to the development of increasingly effective weaponry on the battlefield, with armorers seeking to create better protection without sacrificing mobility.

Is there any lightweight body armor for general use?
Q. I am wondering if there is any lightweight body armor such as a singlet or t shirt that could be worn un obtrusively under general clothing. Obviously this wouldn't provide a great deal of protection, I am just wondering if there is anything out there that would make being on the streets late at night just a little safer. Protection against knives would be more important that guns as they are illegal here, but if there was something that provided both that would be useful. If such an item does exist where does one purchase it?

A. Something as thin as a t-shirt isn't going to protect you regardless of what it is made of. The lightest body armor you can get is a level 1 vest and wouldn't be noticeable under a bulky shirt. This will protect against knives and low powered pistols or revolvers. Just because guns are illegal there doesn't mean criminals do not have them. Criminals don't follow the law! You might want to check out this website. They have some good stuff. Also check ebay because they usually have used vests for cheap.

What if we had body armor in our past wars?
Q. Like during WWI, and WWII, and Vietnam, etc. What if during those times we had body armor/ bullet proof vests/bullet resistant vests. would we have faired better in battle against the enemy? do you think it would make a major difference in the outcome of the wars?

A. it could have, but then again, it more than likely would have prolonged those conflicts due to the fact they would have had that protection. i think it would have made for a bloodier, more brutal war.

can military interceptor ballistic body armor block a katana used by a highly trained samurai?
Q. What if the samurai slashed at it? Or what if the samurai tried to stab and pierce the armor?
Asked by Daba D - Wed Jul 9 17:34:05 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. SAPI plates are porcelain composite material. From a totally hypothetical standpoint (since we're talking Samurai vs IBA) yes, the Samurai is going to go for limb or head separation. Slashing would possibly expose the SAPI at best, and render the vest obsolete at worst. Stab and pierce would compromise the vest as well, although not manufactured for knife and stab protection your standard IBA is going to afford you more protection than not wearing anything at all. Since this is hypothetical anyway, a person wearing IBA would VERY likely have a sidearm, or better yet a carbine or rifle. A person, seeing aformentioned Samurai approaching, would engage them at best distance with aforementioned firearm, rendering this entire argument moot as… [cont.]
