Botany, plant science(s), or plant biology is a branch of biology that involves the scientific study of plant life. Traditionally, botany also included the study of fungi, algae and viruses. Botany covers a wide range of scientific disciplines including structure, growth, reproduction, metabolism, development, diseases, chemical properties, and evolutionary relationships among taxonomic groups. Botany began with early human efforts to identify edible, medicinal and poisonous plants, making it one of the oldest branches of science. Today botanists study over 550,000 species of living organisms. The term "botany" comes from Greek βοτάνη (meaning pasture, grass, or fodder), perhaps via the idea of a livestock keeper needing to know which plants are safe for livestock to eat. Q. I have this one last pesky graduation requirement before I get my Bachelor's degree; a Botany course. It's a freshmen-level course in which I have to write a five-page research paper on something related to plants and their preservation or their use in our lives (i.e. medicinally). But I have no idea what to write on. I don't really have an interest in Botany so I would want to write on something somewhat interesting, otherwise this project will get really boring. So, any suggestions? Asked by meego - Fri Feb 5 20:09:08 2010 - Botany - 2 Answers - Comments A. Five pages can be filled in a relatively short period of time, so try to narrow your topic down to something very specific. Here are some ideas: Find out the name of an endangered/thre atened species near where you live and find out what's being done to protect it. You can probably get a list by googling "threatened and endangered plants + (name of your state)" or visiting your state's website and looking under forestry, natural resources, or natural heritage program. Find out what invasive species are around you and choose one to research in detail (what it looks like, how/when it came to your area, why it's a problem, what's being done to control it). You can google "invasive plants + (name of your state)" for a… [cont.] Answered by Dean M. - Fri Feb 5 20:47:02 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "botany" |
