How do the film Chicago and the Broadway musical version differ?
Q. I've seen the movie, but I've never seen the broadway musical. I know some words may be different, but is the basic storyline the same? Are the songs the same? Are the characters portrayed in the same way?

A. THe Broadway show is surprisingly WAY mroe sexual. Other than that, the songs are the same and the story is the same. The sets are obviously a little different though as one has more creative freedom with a movie.

A. This is a very contemporary show so I would do something from another contemporary show. Try "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee", "Avenue Q", or anything written by Kerrigan and Lowdermilk or Pasek and Paul. Hope this helps and break a leg! :D

What song should I sing for Broadway Talent Show?
Q. Hey, we are having this talent show with a theme of Broadway. I usually love Soulful Rnbish songs... but I have no clue what broadway song I should sing. I would preferably like a song that fits my soulful style (with runs/riffs) and I also love hitting some high notes. Can you guys please help? I'm not too much into the Broadway genre, so this is being really hard.. Thank you in advance.

A. :D You cant Stop the Beat- Hairspray. This song works for about any vocal range, and can be changed so it sounds good on you. Even when i sing it with my soprano friend, it still sounds good.

Is the musical Songs for the New World considered a broadway show?
Q. For an audition coming up we can only do songs from broadway shows. I love a song from this show and want to do it but I don't know if it's considered broadway.

A. Yes, it would be classed as a Broadway show, but Jason Robert Brown is frowned on at auditions, because it's very difficult for the pianist, and if the accompanist is struggling with it then you're not going to be shown to your best advantage. So unless it's another JRB show that you're auditioning for, steer clear. Sondheim is the same.

How much do residential costume designers on broadway make a year?
Q. A residential designer is hired by a specific theatre, dance or opera company for an extended series of productions. This can be as short as a summer stock contract, or may be for many years. A residential designer's contract may limit the amounts of freelance work they are allowed to accept. So if i worked at a theater on broadway, how much would i make?

A. Their next tour will probably coincide with a new album. Other than that, it will probably just be small tours or random shows. Sorry you missed them on their last tour, which was a very long tour.

A. They add a special lighting affect, it's been two years since I've seen it, so I don't totally remember, but I'm pretty sure it's red light, and she climbs to the top of a ladder down stage right and from what I remember she jumps, and I *think* they do a black out, so it looks like she hung herself, but she's attached to a chord so she falls to the floor and laeves, and the audience gets the impression that she hung herself. They might have had a shadow hung cast on the back of the stage...I hope I helpled! I saw the show in July 2007, so it's a little fuzzy :)

How do you become an actress on broadway?
Q. Like do you have to go to college and what exactly are they looking for in terms of actresses for Broadway? What are the auditions like? It would be great if someone that has either been on Broadway themselves or they're really close to the audition process would answer, but you can answer anyway!
Asked by Kayla - Thu Apr 22 23:01:44 2010 - Theater & Acting - 1 Answers - Comments

A. There is no tried and true method of getting on Broadway. Some would argue going to college helps. Others argue that if you have the knack, you just go. I have met some people who were found busking on the street, and they ended up on Broadway. Others were in plays and a producer saw them and offered a role in a bigger play. I'd say that unless you have the guts to be turned down a lot, go to college. Get some formal training behind you, and then work your way up. Take whatever role you can get, small or big. Start out at the regional level working in LORT theatres, Work your way up the LORT chain, and get into bigger and bigger houses. If you're meant to be on Broadway, and have the ambition, it'll pan out. Audition for every role you can, [cont.]

What are some up-beat broadway songs to sing for an audition?
Q. I am auditioning for Peter Pan and i am looking for someup-beat song choices from a broadway musical. I am an alto and can sing some in the soprano range. Do you know any songs that would be good?

A. I like "Happily Ever After" from Once Upon a Mattress, myself. It's pretty funny and gives you the opportunity to show off your acting--plus it's not one of those songs that people hear all the time, so you won't be compared to as many other people.

How much money do actors on Broadway make?
Q. I know this is probably a huge range, but I am interested in that range. We just got back from a trip to NY and saw 2 Broadway Musicals and my daughter asked me how much did the actors make, and I didn't really have an answer. I understand from another post that the minimum is around $1,500 a week, but what would someone who is not very well known, but has been in a few or several plays could expect to make and on the other end, what could a big star like Julia Roberts expect to make?
Asked by jerryhall - Tue Apr 18 14:40:43 2006 - Performing Arts - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Yes: current Equity minimum on Broadway is $1,422 per week (remember, that's for a 6 day work week, in which you'll probably do 8 shows). Because theatre is always a buyers' market--there are way more talented people available than there are parts--there's not much room to negotiate at the low end. Broadway in particular is about marketing and product, so if--as you describe--someone is not very well known, though they've been in shows, they're not likely to get more than minimum. (But that also includes health insurance and payments to their retirement fund amounting to another 12% or so.) Featured performers can of course command more, because they have names, so their salary is negotiable. And stars are always negotiable because that's… [cont.]

What is a good broadway song to sing for the talent part of a pageant?
Q. I'm going to be in a local pageant here and I wanted to sing a song from a broadway play for my talent. How much do regular Broadway performers make for each show or per year?
Q. Not necessarily famous Broadway stars (but if you know that info too, that would be cool), but I mean the really good actors/singers who are in the shows day in/day out. How much do they make per year?
Asked by Umokay - Wed Apr 30 18:59:56 2008 - Theater & Acting - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Actor's Equity sets the rate for the actors. The union basically has a monopoly on acting in New York, which is why is is so risky and expensive to do shows there. The minimum is around $500 a week, but a good actor/singer would make a decent living of about $1000 a week (not enough to live in NY - but that's another problem).

What is a good Broadway song to use to audition?
Q. Hi. I am looking for a song to audition for a play this Saturday and it has to be a Broadway song. I am a girl and my throat has been bothering me. Alto is better. Thank you so much for your help!
Asked by GMAJORSCALE - Wed Oct 31 16:51:01 2007 - Performing Arts - 6 Answers - Comments

A. Is your throat bothering you do to practicing? You may have picked something with a little to much range. I would stay away from current Broadway songs because everyone else will be singing them and the people judging you may begin to tune out. Sing and record your voice and play it back. Remember you will be nervous, so don't pick a difficult piece unless your use to singing solo. Good luck!
