A charter is the grant of authority or rights, stating that the granter formally recognizes the prerogative of the recipient to exercise the rights specified. It is implicit that the granter retains superiority (or sovereignty), and that the recipient admits a limited (or inferior) status within the relationship, and it is within that sense that charters were historically granted, and that sense is retained in modern usage of the term. Also, charter can simply be a document giving royal permission to start a colony.

The word entered the English language from the Old French charte (ultimately from the Latin word for "paper"), but the concept is universal and transcends language. It has come to be synonymous with the document that lays out the granting of rights or privileges.

Colloquial usages

The term is used for a special case (or as an exception) to an institutional charter. A charter school, for example, is one that has different rules, regulations, and statutes than a state school.

Charter is sometimes used as a synonym for 'rent' or 'lease', as in the 'charter' of a bus or boat by an organization, intended for a similar group destination.

A charter member of an organization is an original member; that is, one who became a member when the organization received its charter.

I need marketing ideas for a charter school. What are inexpensive ways to advertise & get more kids to enroll
Q. We are a charter school in our second year and want to attract more families on a very tight budget. Any great and inexpensive marketing ideas would be greatly appreciated. :)

A. In my opinion, its not really the kids you want to attract, is it? Of course not. You want to attract the persons controlling the purse strings : the parents and guardians of those children. The children won t have a choice, will they? OR will they? I think you have to win over the parents and guardians AND the children. The Q is How? Your Q is at a pretty advantageous time - maybe. School is JUST getting ready to open for a new year. My Suggestions #1: IF NOT for this year, how about for next semester and/or next year? An Open House . AND the entire Board of Directors, faculty and staff should be on-hand to answer any and all Qs from parents and children. The Open House should have some light refreshments - but not cheap or… [cont.]

What are the pros and cons about a charter jet job and a commercial airline?
Q. I dont know what I would rather do. I think the charter gig would be more fun and less corperate. However i believe a commercial airline gig would be better pay and all around more "secure" (if secure is even a word i can use in the job market) I would love to here some feed back from both sides. Thanks!

A. Charter can be hit or miss. There are probably 10 operators on my field alone, and I'd probably only work for 3 of them. If you don't have a lot of strings attached, it can be fun to travel the globe at a moments notice. It's rewarding to do all your own trip planning, file your own flight plans, book your own hotels and eat meals on the company card. The flying is often new and refreshing, with lots of empty legs and new destinations. But there are downsides... getting called out to fly in the middle of the night or on your girlfriends birthday. Never being able to make plans because your schedule is virtually non-existant. Sitting in a hotel for 4 straight days waiting for a return trip to book... etc. But if you can find a… [cont.]

why is the charter of rights important to shaping canada to what it is today?
Q. I just need some justifications as to why the charter of rights would be an important part in defining canada?

A. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (also known as The Charter of Rights and Freedoms or simply the Charter, French: La Charte canadienne des droits et libertes) is a bill of rights entrenched in the Constitution of Canada. It forms the first part of the Constitution Act, 1982. The Charter guarantees certain political and civil rights of people in Canada from the policies and actions of all levels of government. It is designed to unify Canadians around a set of principles that embody those rights. The Charter was preceded by the Canadian Bill of Rights, which was enacted in 1960. However, the Bill of Rights was only a federal statute, rather than a constitutional document. As a federal statute, it was limited in scope, was easily… [cont.]
