what do you think about the internet name "Sandra Avenue" as a website domain name? Like a blog spot thing?
Q. I could use blogspot I suppose but I thought it would be more fun to have an actual domain name. My full name is already taken. So what about Sandra Avenue.Com ??? Yes/No? Any other suggestions? It will be used as a semi private "about my life..." etc things that I do etc

As a single artist, should I market myself by name (even though my domain "name" is taken) or by a pseudonym?
Q. I am a graphic designer, but my full name is taken (as a domain). I am forced to use a pseudonym or a clever new name. I would like to use a variation of my name if possible, "Spencer Hill." What options do I really have? Also, other than adding studio or design ( Hill Design /Hill Studio), what are some other names that I can add?

Where do you draw the line as far as a "confusingly similar, trade mark infringing domain name"?
Q. Ok I will use made up names for examples Person #1 owns a federal trade mark called ("Gaming Kingdom"), and owns Gaming Kingdom.com which sells ebook strategy guides. Person #2 goes and buys Halo Kingdom.com and starts to sell Halo ebook strategy guides. Is there anything confusingly similar about those two enough to be trademark infringement?

A. My opinion would be no. That said, when it comes to rulings on purely subjective matters like these, the opinion of anyone but the hearing officer himself is worthless. Richard

A. You will need to sign up as an affiliate with a leading domain name registrar. Once they accept you as an affiliate, you can then log in to your control panel and go to the promotion section which will give you the HTML code for the search form.

A. You are wanting to do what is called a DNS transfer. The new company can sometimes initiate the DNS transfer, but at some point the administrative contact for the domain (I'm guessing you) will have to tell Company #1, I want to transfer my DNS to Company #2. A lot of domain companies will make it more obvious on how to transfer a domain to them, and most companies will make it more difficult to transfer a domain away from them (they don't want to lose business). Be aware that your 'web site' is a group of files that currently reside with company #1. What kind of domain name does ".name" stand for?
Q. I want to set up a website ending with .hk or .com.hk, but my hosting company don't have such a choice for me to choose from to register. The only choices are .com, .net, .bs,.. and .name for me to register. Is it that if I choose .name, it can allow me to further choose domain names like .hk, .us, .ws etc.? Thank you in advance.

A. The '.name' top-level domain is intended for people's personal identity domain. I.e., the '.name' is for YOUR name -- . It will not allow you to also have .hk or .us also. Note that the '.name' TLD is not yet in common usage.

For "shut down" websites, is the "domain name" lost ?
Q. Hi all, I am going to launch a website, but I have a few worries about copyright infringements (it will consist in short movieclips). My hosting service claim that it can "shut down" website if it doesn't respect copyright, law, etc.. But what does it mean, "to shut down" a website ?? Just erasing the files of the server? Or to cancel the domain name also(I'm very worry about that) ? Domain name is a property, right? Some of them costs millions! So can my hosting service, where I recorded the domain, cancel my ownership of this name without warning me?? Thank you in advance!
Asked by JR - Wed May 30 14:19:30 2007 - Computer Networking - 4 Answers - Comments
A. Depending on your agreement with the web host they can stop hosting your site and even delete it off there servers. The domain name however is yours and you will still control it. They may refuse to be your registrar and in that case you will have to find a new one. If you plan on doing this in the future I recommend you get your domain registered with someone other than your web host. I recommend

"Premium" domain names? Since when?
Q. I remember up until a couple of years ago, you could punch in just about any idea of a domain name (.com, net, org, etc) and if it was available, it was yours for 35$. All of a sudden, if a name that was easy and catchy was miraculously unreserved, the domain registrars decided to attach a premium fee to it, calling it a "premium domain name". I've seen them as high as 4000$ to register them. I have yet to get the answer to, since when did THEY decide they'll take these available names hostage and profit largely from them when nobody owns them? looking for ideas to find an answer to that and if it is in fact lawful.

A. Domain brokers are crooked and their tactics are unethical. As far as legal goes, I think it depends on which company they are in. I was told that in the USA that there is a law called "Domain High-jacking" which is illegal, however what would it cost to hire a law firm to fight this? I have seen these companies hijack someones personal name and will "sell" it to anyone with that name for hundreds of dollars. Personally, I would like to see these crooks go down. //#

A. If your domain name is not locked up - meaning that it is current as far as billing is concerned, you should be able to transfer it to another registrar. This experience will probably test your patience - just a word of warning! You might want to seek a company that offers an end-to-end solution. For example, a provider that will allow you to register the domain name, as well as offer space on a server to host your web for a reasonable fee. They can then build the specific information in their DNS servers so your web will be available to the world. Hope this helps!
