Daimyo

Daimyo (大名, Daimyō, Pronunciation (help·info)) is a generic term referring to the powerful territorial lords in premodern Japan who ruled most of the country from their vast, hereditary land holdings. In the term, "dai" (大) literally means "large", and "myō" stands for myōden (名田), meaning private land.

They were the most powerful feudal rulers from the 10th century to the middle 19th century in Japan following the Shogun.

From the shugo of the Muromachi period through the Sengoku to the daimyo of the Edo period, the rank had a long and varied history.

The term "daimyo" is also sometimes used to refer to the leading figures of such clans, also called "lord". It was usually, though not exclusively, from these warlords that a shogun arose or a regent was chosen.

Japan Daimyo and Europe Nobility Compare/Contrast?
Q. there political characteristics? social characteristics? economic characteristics?
Asked by sam_wow@ymail.com - Tue Jan 13 15:45:08 2009 - - 1 Answers - Comments

A. The Daimyo and European nobility were similar because even though they were important political figures, they didn't actually have all that much power because they were kept under close watch by the shoguns/kings. For example, the daimyo were usually kept at Edo where the shoguns would supervise them. This is like how the French nobility were kept at the king's court at Versailles so they could be supervised.

What quality of weapons were issued to ashigaru?
Q. As a military historian I feel the need to address an argument between two of my friends. They are disagreeing on the quality of weapons issued to common troops in feudal armies (namely swords). I know that they had to be substandard to the Daimyo and Samurai but to what extent?
Asked by David P - Mon Jan 24 19:13:59 2011 - - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Ashigaru didn't carry swords, they chiefly used pole-arms (spears). Even the ranked samurai rarely if ever used their swords in actual combat, preferring to use spears, bows, or guns. As for quality, some ashigaru merely used sawed off bamboo spears lacking a metal spear head. Be mindeful that ashigaru were many times forcibly conscripted peasants who were often expected to bring their own weapons.
