How can I transfer a domain name from one registrar to another?
Q. I registered a domain name a few months ago with a little known company. The problem is the company's service is a piece of crap - half the time their name servers are down. So I want to transfer that domain name to godaddy. So how do I go about it? Do I need to notify the old registrar and get their permission or can I just pay godaddy for the transfer and have it take place?

A. Don t trust any cheap service, many of them don t allow you to have full control on your domain name. If you re going to buy domain names, refer to: Gold Puma is the lowest cost service which is full-featured and really works for you ($9.99 /year). They offer free extras with every domain name: Quick Blogcast Hosting with Web site builder Personalized Email Account Starter Web Page For Sale/ Parked Page Domain Parking Domain Forwarding Domain Masking 100-Pack Email Forwarding Total DNS Control Change of Registration Status Alerts Domain Locking As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. Is it legal to buy a domain name when it becomes available and to then forward that domain?
Q. I am not sure how this works legally. If someone were to buy a domain after it had expired and the renew period had ended and the original owner had not renewed could a competing business then legally forward traffic to their own site after buying the domain? In this case the domain is the name of the other business.
Asked by snowy - Tue Dec 18 11:30:20 2007 - Law & Ethics - 4 Answers - 1 Comments
A. In short, you cannot use another's trademark or a confusingly similar variant in order to forward traffic to your site. Domain disputes are generally handled under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). While the UDRP is relatively new, the number of decisions is pretty substantial and the case law is pretty well developed for most common disputes. Decided cases can be searched at the link below. As an example, look at the case below. Someone registered 11 domain names found confusingly similar to JP Morgan's trademarks. All 11 domain names were transferred from the registrant to JP Morgan.

A. When you get a domain at Go Daddy they will provide a minimum webspace at least for a webpage. Then if you go into the DNS file it creates for your domain (called a Zone File) it will be quite clear. Lets say you got example.com There will be example.com and an IP www.example.com and an IP mailservers to handle the mail for example.com with their IPs possible some others such as ftp.example.com and gallery.example.com You can just go ahead and change any of those you want to your IP number and save it. Anywhere from 1 day to a week it will wash all thru the caches on the net to make it official for everyone But remember, DNS is just Domain NAME server. It translates the name, to an address. A. This is a classic 'how long is a piece of string' question. Domain names vary firstly depending on the extension eg .com .info .net .org - you could always buy the same name with a different extension if its available. Prices could be anything from $10 a year down to about $3 or $4 a year if the domain is 'available' ie. not currently registered. If it IS registered (as you say your is) whoever has it can command whatever price they think is appropriate running from hundreds into thousands of dollars - especially if they bought it with the intention of selling it on. This is completely arbitrary - there is no price list that you can apply, it is worth whatever the owner says it is worth - but you could always make an offer and see what… [cont.]

What do you do after registering a domain name?
Q. I want to register a domain name and create a website. I can get a domain name for about 7 bucks...but what happens after I buy it? How do I work on the site? I have hosting already. Will they give me a login or something after registering the domain?
Asked by thisthingsucks - Mon Jul 23 12:30:35 2007 - Small Business - 7 Answers - 1 Comments
A. When you register a domain name you will have to get your hosting either through that company or through another one. If you set up your hosting and domain through the same company then they should give you everything you need to work on your site right there. If you set up with another hosting company then you will need to either forward your website to your other hosting company or you will need to Change your DNS to your other hosting company. Either one will help you with that through support.

What are the differences between different Domain name registrars?
Q. Why do i have to pay 10 dollars per year at yahoo and 3 dollars at some other company, for a domain name? It's just the domain name right? i'm not talking about email or hosting services. When you register a domain name www.something.com You get the same thing at every company, right? so what does it matter if i get it at yahoo or at whatever place else? Also, is it maybe so that you can't get email and hosting at a registrar if you didn't get the domain name from them?

Q. I bought a domain name on google, thinking I was just buying the domain name. Nope. Google make it impossible to customize your site or to upload FTP files. You then give that code to your preferred registrar (Go Daddy) during the registration process. Q. What's the difference between domain name system and domain name server?

A. Hello, The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical naming system for computers, services, or any resource participating in the Internet. It associates various information with domain names assigned to such participants. Most importantly, it translates domain names meaningful to humans into the numerical (binary) identifiers associated with networking equipment for the purpose of locating and addressing these devices world-wide. An often used analogy to explain the Domain Name System is that it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-friendly computer hostnames into IP addresses. For example, www.example.com translates to 208.77.188.166. A domain name server (or name server) is a computer that houses… [cont.]

How do I find out who owns a domain name?
Q. I want to buy a certain domain name to put up a website. The domain name isn't used, but it unavailable. How do i find out who owns it?
Asked by Ben M - Fri Nov 14 03:24:19 2008 - Other - Internet - 7 Answers - 1 Comments
A. To find the owner of any domain, the first step is to go to a whois site. 1) 2) Input the domain in the 'WHOIS Lookup' section 3) You will generally see the owner of the domain under 'Registrant','Administrative Contact', or 'Technical Contact'. *Sometimes domain owners have hidden their names by purchasing extra privacy options. In a case like this, they generally will have a made up name and company, BUT you will see a masked email address. This masked email address will not be the owners actual email address, but will forward to the owner. If you need additional help or questions please feel free to contact me as I own a domain company and work with similar matters often.

A. When you purchase a domain name from an online registrar, this guarantees that you will be the sole user of that name for as long as you keep it registered. So every year you need to renew the registration to be the sole owner of the domain name.

A. Hello, First check at following: 1. Name of ICANN Registrar 2. Details in Admin Contact details If admin contact details are yours, then approach Registrar directly and ask them to provide you control panel. They will help you for gain control on domain name. If admin details are not yours, then it is bit difficult for you to prove that domain is owned by you. Still contact registrar and ask if they can help you in this matter. They may ask you to provide few legal documentation and some other proof to give you the control of domain. Regards, Vinay

If you sell a domain name you have owned for 13 years do you pay capital gains taxes on thoses monies?
Q. If not what taxes would you pay and if you sell the domain next year (2008) are you exempt from CGT under the rule that if you fall into the 10% to !5% tax bracket you pay no CGT in 2008. This would be in the United States. Obviously we would make a profit from the sale of the domain name.

A. It's an asset, so yes, any gain is capital gain. Yes, it's possible that if your taxable income is small enough, some of the gain will be taxed at 0% in 2008.
