A drug, broadly speaking, is any substance that, when absorbed into the body of a living organism, alters normal bodily function. There is no single, precise definition, as there are different meanings in drug control law, government regulations, medicine, and colloquial usage.

In pharmacology, a drug is "a chemical substance used in the treatment, cure, prevention, or diagnosis of disease or used to otherwise enhance physical or mental well-being." Drugs may be prescribed for a limited duration, or on a regular basis for chronic disorders.

Recreational drugs are chemical substances that affect the central nervous system, such as opioids or hallucinogens. They may be used for perceived beneficial effects on perception, consciousness, personality, and behavior. Some drugs can cause addiction and habituation.

Drugs are usually distinguished from endogenous biochemicals by being introduced from outside the organism. For example, insulin is a hormone that is synthesized in the body; it is called a hormone when it is synthesized by the pancreas inside the body, but if it is introduced into the body from outside, it is called a drug.

Many natural substances such as beers, wines, and some mushrooms, blur the line between food and drugs, as when ingested they affect the functioning of both mind and body.

What is the drug/chemical used when putting a dog to sleep?
Q. We just had to put one of my mother's dogs down today due to congestive heart failure. I was wondering, and can't seem to find the answer elsewhere, what the drug/chemical they used to euthanize her. They used a sedative first, but the actual drug that stopped her function was purple in color. Anyone know what it is? I'd like to think it was painless, but I'd like to do my own research!

A. I'm very sorry about your loss. It could be any of the following; Sodium Pentothal, Phenabarbitol or Demerol. They will slowly stop the heart beat. The sedative is given to avoid any waking up of the dog, or any pain it may get. Mostly the drugs won't make your dog have pain at all, but the dog may suddenly wake up and see you there and afterwards run around and cause itself some pain. This is why the sedative is given. I'm so sorry about your loss, you can't imagine how sad it is to have a life in your hands, that you know you will have to put down. I'm sorry,

Why is it legal drug companies charge Americans more for drugs than they charge others in foreign countries?
Q. It seems that research and development that is done by US drug companies is paid for by the US citizenry. If we go to the goverment health plan, R&D will be the first to go.

A. Sad, isn't it? American citizens have to go to Canada to get affordable prescription meds? What a joke.
