what are the most important elements for a healthy growing garden?
Q. what elements found necessary to be found in the ground so planets can grow healthy and nice. i hear someone was talking about nitrogen for example. what other elements are important for gardens?

A. there are a few basic but very important elements to a heathy garden,of course some of the needs will vary depending on species of plant.first off is the soil you will be planting in,it needs to be loose and as a rule about a 40% mix of sand 40% of loam and 20% clay that is a good soil mix to aim for.as for fertilizer an example would be 16-10-8 the 16 is your nitrogen important for plants food production(that nice green color) 10 is phosphorus needed for flower and fruit production,8 is your Potassium aka potash which is needed for good root devepment, there also minor elements such as iron, zinc, magenese but most plants do fine with a 6-6-6

What elements in storytelling can make a novel become a bestseller?
Q. What are the elements or ingredients in the writings of John Grisham, James Patterson, Nora Robert and Stephen King that make their novels bestsellers? Others try to imitate them by producing legal thrillers, romance and horror but their books are not as popular as the above authors. What makes their books sell?
Asked by Ray Mystery - Wed Apr 8 05:06:13 2009 - - 1 Answers - Comments

A. It's hard to say really. Some people just have that knack for telling a story better than others. I've read books that I normally would not simply because they were written in a way that kept my interest going, and they don't stall so much it seems. It's the same with anything, some skills can be honed, but only to an extent. They either have that talent innately, work hard to attain it, or they just plain can't do it.

What created the elements which are most essential to life?
Q. The most common elements in the Universe are hydrogen and helium. The elements most essential to life as we know it are carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. Where and how do all these elements get made? Note: the five elements mentioned (hydrogen, helium, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen) are not all made at the same time and place.
Asked by Michael K - Thu Apr 30 00:01:08 2009 - - 5 Answers - Comments

A. Hydrogen is fused into helium, which is then fused into carbon and oxygen in the cores of stars by the proton-proton fusion process. Nitrogen is also created by stellar fusion in the CNO process: "...Because the triple-alpha process switches on so rapidly with temperature, all stellar cores that are fusing helium have essentially the same temperature, so that the ratios of carbon-12 to oxygen-16 to neon-20 to magnesium-24 within a stellar core is essentially the same for all stellar cores. In the universe, the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth most abundant elements are oxygen, neon, nitrogen, and carbon. The triple-alpha process and the CNO process of hydrogen fusion are responsible for this, with the triple-alpha process creating… [cont.]

How can an astronomer determine the elements of nebulae ?
Q. How can an astronomer tell what elements are in a nebulae using a spectrometer? Specifically, if a nebula has, lets say, three different elements inside of it, how can one separate the light in order to detect all three elements? I can't figure out how to detect more than one element in a nebula using a spectrometer.
Asked by starfoxrocks2002 - Thu Jan 21 19:10:13 2010 - - 2 Answers - Comments

A. A Spectrometer measures the "spectrum" of something -- in this case, light. As you know, white light is actually made up of ALL colors -- red, blue, green, etc). You can see these if your use a PRISM. Now, the COLOR of a light is determined by its wavelength. Each color has a distinct wavelength. For example, "green light" has spectrum in the wavelengths of 510-570 nanometers. ANY light in this band will appear "green". It will be light green or yellow green or blue green or dark green, depending on the wavelength. So, the SPectrometer has like an electronic prism inside that separates all the wavelengths, like a radio tuner separates all the radio wavelengths. Now, nebula are VERY hot, so hot, in fact, [cont.]

Asked by Shilpi - Wed Oct 13 04:00:04 2010 - - 2 Answers - Comments

A. 1) Let a and b be two sides of the triangle such that b>a. Determine the radius of the circumcircle of the the triangle from following Q.E. in R^2 {1-(a/b)^2} R^4 - ((b^2 - 5 a^2)/4) R^2 - a^2 b^2/2 = 0 Draw the circle with above radius and mark the sides a and b of the triangle. Join the 3rd side the triangle is formed 2) Analytically after knowing R, the angle opp. to side a is given by Sin^-1(a/2R) Hence 3rd element is determined and the triangle can be constructed as by conventional approach

What elements are byproducts in a nuclear reactor?
Q. I am doing a science project, and I need to know what certain elements are byproducts of nuclear reactors. This would really help!
Asked by Aj - Tue Feb 16 17:36:37 2010 - - 2 Answers - Comments

A. You are looking for a list of fission products. See the links. Most fission products are unstable and will decay into other elements, so your byproducts should include the fission products as well as the elements they decay into which are called "daughter products". Also, sometimes U235 absorbs a neutron but doesn't fission.

What 3 elements in the same group have different valence configurations?
Q. So this is the one question that I can't figure out. I thought all elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons, thus the same valence configurations but different principle quantum numbers. Someone please help. Thanks in advance.
Asked by Qt W - Tue Mar 25 18:40:26 2008 - - 1 Answers - Comments

A. It's "principal" quantum numbers, but OK. You can't figure it out because it's a dumb question, the point of which is useless trivia rather than actual understanding or application of chemical principles. (Which isn't "principals".) Whoever asked it of you is a silly person who is missing the point. You are absolutely correct. Same group = same # valence electrons = same valence electronic config = same chemistry. That's the take home message, that's the reason to learn electronic configs, that's the reason the periodic table is so astoundingly useful. You got that message, you're in good shape. Except that the configs on the table are those determined by experimental measurements of gas phase atoms. And… [cont.]

Asked by Catzie - Sun Nov 11 05:29:14 2007 - - 1 Answers - Comments

A. The elements that you have written down are for the plot of the story. If you look at the story as a mountain with a peak, you can actually put the different parts of the plot on the mountain. The introduction is where the story opens, the rising action is where the plot points are leading into the climax, the main point of the story where something huge usually happens. The falling action are the points that are coming away from the climax as we are going down the mountain, and the resolution ties up the whole story, and it is found on the other side of the base of the mountain. For example, we could look at this from a mystery story. The introduction could tell something about the background of the main character or the mystery itself.… [cont.]

What key elements must be in a zombie movie?
Q. What are those things, cliches, elements, characters, plot points, twists that every zombie film must absolutely have? I ask because I am writing a zombie film and I want to make sure I don't miss something essential. Thanks to any and all who answer.
Asked by Rafael - Thu Mar 4 01:05:48 2010 - - 8 Answers - Comments

A. Well, you need zombies first. Define what kind of zombies. You have to decide whether they are fast, slow, intelligent, dumb, what their motor and sensory skills are like, etc. Then, you decide what caused the zombie outbreak, and how the surviving people (if there are any) survived. The characters should have a story that clearly affected their feeling towards the zombies and outbreak (for example, in Zombieland, Woody Harrelson was reallly bitter and unafraid of the zombies for a reason, which is where his story comes in). Also, for characters, you can decide to have some cliched ones, or just some unique characters. But you have to decide first whether you'll have them stick together, like each other or not, hide from the zombies or… [cont.]

How are the heavier elements such as Iron and Nickel formed in Stars?
Q. I understand that in our Sun, Helium is formed when two Hydrogen atoms are fused. I also understand that heavier elements are not formed in this process. However what kind of stars form the heavier elements, such as Iron and Nickel?
Asked by Joe C - Mon Jan 19 20:51:06 2009 - - 2 Answers - Comments

A. When the supply of hydrogen fuel in a star is used up, it moves on to fusing heavier and heavier elements up to iron. After iron, the star has effectively run out of fuel no matter how big it is. Elements heavier than iron are created in supernovae.

How many chemical elements from the periodic table are mentioned specifically in the bible?
Q. I'm referring to the elements of the periodic table. Gold and Silver are mentioned, obviously, so that's two. Are there others? I doubt there are any direct references to lighter elements, such as oxygen or hydrogen, because they would have only been known by the substances that contain them such as "air" and "water". I'm just being curious here. I'd love to get a comprehensive list of all elements directly referred to in the bible.

How is it that heavier elements mangaged to escape the sun's core during formation, resulting in planets?
Q. You would think that lighter elements would have been thrown out, and the sun would be made of the higher density elements then the throw out one's. Was the fusion repulsive to these elements for some universal principle cause?
Asked by Josh Alfred - Wed Dec 1 17:07:35 2010 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments

A. The heavier elements did not escape the sun's core at all. Actually,~99% of the heavy elements that comprised the pre-solar system nebula are now residing in the mass of the Sun. (This is what is meant by the "metalicity" of a given star.) The 1% or so of the heavy elements that had sufficient angular momentum to escape collapse into the Sun's gravity well are now orbiting our Sun in the form of planets. Angular momentum is the only known force that can cancel the gravitational pull of planet sized objects and keep them from falling into the Sun. Thus we have planets, and moons, for that manner.
