A. Banpaku (Expo memorial park) near Senrioka if you like open gardens and serenity. You coluld also enjoy the Monorail as the monorail station is a good link to Banpaku from Osaka station. Avoid Universal studios unless you understand Japanese. most of the rides there are sound based and there is no english option available. the Aquarium is good (kaiyukaan). There is a huge Ferris wheel next to it, splendid ride and excellent for photography. The ferris wheel is one of the 5 biggest wheels in the world. Big-Man is an old iconic site. its actually just the plaza area of Ummeda railway station. It used to be a popular meeting-up place a few years ago. Kyobashi area ... When should I buy a Shinkansen ticket to Osaka?
Q. Hi, I am planning to go to Osaka from Tokyo next Saturday by Shinkansen. I have most of the info I need, but when should I buy the ticket? Is it possible to buy the ticket on Saturday on my way to Tokyo station or should I buy it earlier? And one more thing, what is the difference between Hikari/Kodama and the Nozomi? I observed that Nozomi is a little expensive but apart from that what is the difference between them? Thanks a million

A. If you want a reserved seat, then it is better to buy your ticket earlier (just because there may be no seats left in reserved) - you have to get reserved seat tickets from a JR ticket desk, but you can buy non-reserved tickets right before you get the train, either from the ticket desk or the automated ticket machine. Non-reserved seating is usually in the first 3 cars. The difference between the trains is the number of stops - Kodama is the slowest, stopping at every station. Hikari stops at fewer stations than Kodama but more than Nozomi. Nozomi is the fastest, and only stops at Nagoya and Kyoto between Osaka and Kyoto.

A. I usually fly through IAD (or DCA) at least once a day, but I haven't seen a direct flight to Osaka in a few years. I know that United used to fly a direct route several times a week, but that was cancelled a few years ago. But if you've got the ticket, I'm probably just missing something =] By the way, would you mind letting me know what carrier flies there nonstop? It might be useful if I ever get around to visiting my friend, haha. That being said, IAD to NRT (Tokyo) took 13h40 last time I flew it on ANA, so flight time to Osaka should be comparable. Have a nice flight, and hope this helps!
