A fighter aircraft is a military aircraft designed primarily for air-to-air combat with other aircraft, as opposed to a bomber, which is designed primarily to attack ground targets by dropping bombs. Fighters are small, fast, and maneuverable. Many fighters have secondary ground-attack capabilities, and some are dual-roled as fighter-bombers; the term "fighter" is also sometimes used colloquially for dedicated ground-attack aircraft. Fighter aircraft are the primary means by which armed forces gain air superiority over their opponents in battle. Since at least World War II, achieving and maintaining air superiority has been a key component of victory in warfare, particularly conventional warfare between regular armies (as opposed to guerrilla warfare). The purchase, training and maintenance of a fighter fleet represent a very substantial proportion of defense budgets for modern militaries. From Wikipedia under the

Q. How does the best chinese fighter aircraft compare to the best US fighter aircraft? Asked by Ali - Thu Feb 26 00:54:33 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. It's not real world practical to compare best Chinese vs. best US fighter, there's to many variables. Having said that, all things being equal, the newest version of the Su-27 (which the Chinese have) probably has the advantage over the American mainstay, the F-15, which the design is approaching 40 years. But in the "real world" the US would have better "situational awareness" through it's domination of AWACs aircraft so they could "pick and choose" when and where they fight. Also, the US pilots would most likely be better flyers and have better tactics- which is more important than which is "best". Historically one-on-one air fighting is almost irrelevant. In Israel's wars of 67 and 73 they had inferior aircraft, but better pilots,… [cont.] Answered by halffull39 - Thu Feb 26 01:51:02 2009 what are the few country that have developed sophestical and advanced fighter aircraft in the world? Rumoured to be specifically designed to intercept the SR71 and the A-11. Without a load, it can go faster than Mach 3 With a combat load, that speed is reduced to Mach 2.8 This is actually pretty good. The f-16, with a light load : sidewinders on the wing tips, can barely go past Mach 2. The F-14 doesn't go faster than Mach 1.81 loaded and the F-15 Eagle, Mach 1.78 loaded. Speed isn't life, that is true, but since your question is about speed, here you go. Extra Trivia Max operating altitude is 67,000 feet but it has been up to 123,492 feet or so for a sustained altitude record.
