How much of a monetary gift can you recieve without being taxed?
Q. My wife and I are in a financial bind. My friend is willing to loan us money. Obviously not through a bank. My friend will gift us the money as a gift (of course we are paying it back) into our bank account. My question is does anyone know how much of a gift I can receive withouth having to pay taxes on it? We live in CA if that makes any difference. S5tevo, thanks for the link and info.

A. As long as it is a gift, then there is no tax. It's like a loan. You don't pay taxes on a loan. If the loan were paid off with interest, then there still is nothing for you to have to report to IRS. Since your friend is not gifting the money to you, he has nothing to declare to IRS.

Is a gender neutral baby gift appropriate as a Christmas gift for a couple expecting their third child?
Q. My boyfriend's friend and his wife are expecting their third child. They already have two boys ages three and one. I thought since they are being so kind to let me stay with them and my boyfriend for three weeks, I'd get them something for Christmas. I don't know the gender of the baby, so would a gender neutral baby gift be appropriate for their Christmas gift? I have no idea what that will be. Suggestions are appreciated!

A. Of course! I'd be terrible to give them something feminine when it turns out to be a boy! Oh, I guess you mean to get them "a baby gift?" :) Yes, I'm sure the parents would love it. What woman DOESN'T like getting baby things(especially a pregnant woman)? Plus, I'm sure it will be very useful to them as well. I'd be interested to know what you were getting them(not that it matters too much I guess). What are some great gift ideas to give parents of a newborn baby or a child?
Q. A bunch of my friends are starting to have kids now, so I want to give them a gift that is really useful and thoughtful. I usually fall back on either a bib, little baby clothes, onesies, or a gift certificate to Target. Is there anything more unique or more useful I can get the parents? Are there any customized gifts that are good? Since I don't have kids, I am clueless! Thanks!

A. Newborns - diapers diapers and more diapers. I know it's boring, but it is VERY useful. Diapers are expensive and babies go through a TON. They are also ok if you get the wrong size, because they are very easily exchangable with or without a receipt. Fantastic gift for toddlers - they have music CD's and books that you can order personalized with the children's name. Like my daughter (2 years old) has an Elmo CD that says "Come on Mia, let's play a game!" and she just LOVES it. She will listen to it over and over again... My oldest (five years old) has many books that are personalized with her name printed into the story and she just thinks that is cooler than snot. :) Also a really nice gift that I have been given in… [cont.]

Q. My friend is getting married soon and I plan on gifting her for her bridal shower and wedding. I spent around 70 for her bridal gift. What should I give for the wedding. A. I think a gift basket would be great. Pick a theme, like kitchen utensils, arrange them in a nice pitcher or a large bowl. Bathroom: soaps, washcloths, toothpaste, plunger, etc in a small trash can. Mostly, think of all the little things you forget about when you first move into your own place. Cleaning supplies, nails, spices! The personal touch will make it sweet, and the relief when they realize they don't have to run out to wal-mart for that little extra for dinner will make a great memory. This is also an idea I came up with on my own, thinking it would be really cute if someone did it for my own wedding gift. If the couple's last name is also a brand name, buy a basket and fill it with those things. My soon to be name is Hines. So,… [cont.]

What would be a nice gift to give a young 16 year old hispanic female who helps me translate from time to time?
Q. Within the last year and a half she has translated for me numerous times, and I thought it would be nice to get her a gift. A. probably the same gift you'd get a 16 year old caucasian female? - You could get her the spanish version of your favorite book. Or just your favorite book. - Bake something! Get in the kitchen and show off some family recipes! I often give baklava and spanikopita as gifts. They take a lot of effort, but they're always well received. If you don't have any family recipes, then make up a basket with cookies. (or if you're hopeless in the kitchen, go to a bakery and make a nice gift basket). - She has to have some sort of interests beyond translating! Use those... - Why not give her a little herb garden or some potted flowers? You could even make a nice planted arrangement for her. - a little gift basket with face masks, foot… [cont.]

What is a good cheap gift to give with a gift certificate?
Q. I am getting my families gift certificates to restaurants this year because I am low on money. But I was wondering what would be a good side gift to give along with it. Nothing to expensive but not cheap. I am just looking for ideas.
Asked by Missy - Mon Dec 7 20:17:38 2009 - - 3 Answers - Comments
A. Try combining it with a basket filled with chocolates or other candy. You can get the ingredients you need pretty cheaply, and it creates a very nice package. Suddenly, it's not just a gift card, it's a gift basket. Yossi's Sweet House has some very nice gifts put together, and if you don't want to buy one, you can look at them for inspiration at www.yossissweethouse.com. Another option would be to purchase some small stuffed animals and tie the cards to them with ribbon. They get to enjoy the card and the stuffed animal reminds them who gave it. This also works well for jewelry and other small items.

Thoughtful gift ideas for the girls coming to my baby shower?
Q. I am having a baby shower next weekend. There will be about 10 people in attendance and I am trying to think of something small, sweet and inexpensive I can do for them to thank them for coming. I am planning on sending thank you cards, of course, but would also like to bring a small token gift for each person with me to the party. Thanks for your ideas!

A. I would get either the small lotions or soaps from a store like Bath & Body Works-- a nice gesture and only a few dollars apiece. You could even attach the soap to a loofah-- you can get 3 or 4 for $1 at some dollar stores.

What kind of gift to buy a man for a marriage anniversary?
Q. We are in our mid 20s and in the past few years leading up to now we never really did the "gift" thing. We just took it upon ourselves to buy each other something what we wanted at that moment. This year I want to do something different. I want to surprise him with a gift. I will be gifting him with something that is specific to his likes, BUT...Generally speaking, what are some gifts that are usually given to a man on a marriage anniversary?

A. It is hard to say with out knowing the guy. You know better then any of us what he likes. Speaking as a man in general terms, I like gadgets and video games. I don't usually like jewlery or getting clothes from her. I like it when she gets me a cologne she likes me to wear because it usually means she is all over me when I wear it. I like it when she gets me something I've said I had my eye on in the past because it means she cared enough to remember it. Also, extra special anniversary sex is a must. Hopefully you already have plans in that department.

What kind of gift would you get a former teacher who was moving away?
Q. So my French teacher last year who loves me as a student is moving to France. She is leaving in a few days, and I need to get her a gift, but do not know what to get. She is not my teacher this year but me and a friend usually go to visit her sometimes, and I'd consider us friends. What do I get her as a going away gift!
Asked by Anonymous M - Fri Oct 26 13:52:43 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments
A. A book would be a good gift. Do not forget to place a small card, with a few witty "goodbye and remember" lines, preferably in French. A painting would also be a good choice. Nothing extremely fancy though. A portrait of the person or of yourselves by a good artist would be interesting. Or maybe a short poem in French. Of course, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT forget the compulsory bouquet de roses. Preferably white one. A box of quality chocolates might also be interesting. Nice wrappings and quality materials are a must. A picture of your class with a few words and signatures from each of her pupils would be a hearty gift for a teacher. You might also try something to remember her the US. One of those photo albums containing… [cont.]

Q. So my French teacher last year who loves me as a student is moving to France. She is leaving in a few days, and I need to get her a gift, but do not know what to get. She is not my teacher this year but me and a friend usually go to visit her sometimes, and I'd consider us friends. What do I get her as a going away gift!

A. A book would be a good gift. Do not forget to place a small card, with a few witty "goodbye and remember" lines, preferably in French. A painting would also be a good choice. A. Maybe something for his office or home. 1) Try some global gifts Ten Thousand Villages has some neat gifts handcrafted by global natives. 2) Smithsonian store also has interesting selections. 3) National Geographic store has some bestsellers that might give you ideas 4) The Genome DNA project kit for $100 - send in a swab of your DNA and they track your ancestors and donate funds to the Legacy Project - https://genographic.natio nalgeographic.com/genogra phic/journey.html

How can we do a gift exchange where adults buy gift for children when there are more children than adults?
Q. Our family is getting larger and larger, with more and more children. This year we have decided not to buy gifts for adults and just exchange names for the children. The problem we have is that there are more children than adults. We are trying to think of the best way to handle a gift exchange without braking the bank for our families. We have 7 adults and 8 kids. The kids range from newborn to 10 years old. We have thought about just having someone buying one additional gift, but is this our only option?

A. I'm not sure how the kids are rationed out. Do all people have kids? What we do in my family is, however many kids you have, thats how many names you pull. I have two children, so I pick two names. My sister has 3 kids, so she pulls 3 names. The ball/laptop comment reminded me of something else. Each kid gets a 25 dollar gift. The reason we did this is because I was a poor college kid...lol...I didn't have the money so I made the suggestion. Christmas seemed so commercialized and it seemed like thats what we were teaching the kids. "Christmas is about stressing out what to get people and wondering how you are going to make ends meet." I thought my request would get shot down since I was the only one without money, but everyone… [cont.]

What is the free gift that is given to me after I register at Crate and Barrel?
Q. My mother in law is insisting that I register for my wedding at Crate and Barrel because they give the bride a cool gift. I don't really have planned to register at Crate and Barrel - but she said to do it anyway and just register for at least one silly gift so I can get the free one. Does anyone know what that free gift is anyway?

A. I registered last year and there was no free gift. Perhaps there was at one time but I don't think they offer one anymore.
