Is there a herbacide which will kill morning glory but not the plants it entwines around?
Q. I'm just wondering. I have a morning glory problem and most of it too close to other plants so i can't use round-up.

A. I used to have a terrible infestation of wild morning glory (also known as field bindweed) in my shrub and rose beds. We're talking about the stuff with the small white/pale pink flowers, right? It's important to get this stuff removed before it goes to seed ~ if you don't have time to deal with it now, you can pinch off the blossoms to stop the seeds from scattering, and address the problem later. How I dealt with it was 1) Soak the bed the night before to loose the soil. 2) The next morning, follow the vines down to the roots and gently pull the roots out of the ground. 3) Mulch the beds with a thick layer of black & white newspaper, covered with 4 inches of grass clippings. Problem solved. You may have a few stray seeds sprout up… [cont.]

How do I take care of a potted Hydrangea Macrophylla Glory Blue?
Q. I Just bought a Glory Blue and I've read that you can have pink flowers by making the soil alkaline. How do I do that? What kind of potting soil should I buy? Plant food? Sun or shade? Water amount? Anything you can tell me about the bush would be helpful.
Asked by Its a Beautiful Day! - Sat Jun 30 12:55:37 2007 - Garden & Landscape - 1 Answers - Comments

A. Hydrangeas are relatively easy to grow in well-drained soils containing plenty of organic matter. They prefer warm, morning sun and cooler, afternoon shade. Avoid planting in hot, dry, exposed sites. The best time to plant them is fall. Early spring is the next best planting time. With extra care, they can be planted at other times. Blue or pink blooms depend on soil p H AND corresponding available aluminum. At lower p H levels (acid soils), aluminum is more readily available to the plant and flowers become blue. At higher p H ranges (more alkaline soils), aluminum is less available and flowers are pink. Want pink flowers? Add lime to raise soil p H. Want blue flowers? Add sulfur to lower soil p H. Changing soil p H is a gradual process… [cont.]

Is it too late to plant them this summer season?I would love waking up seeing those morning glories and would love the scent the moonflower encompassed the evenings. Northwest..Zone 4/5

A. I just moved from zone 5 and I can tell you from experience that morning glories like poor, well drained soil.I don't know about moon flowers though. Don't fertilize morning glories after they are established or you will get a ton of leaves and no blossom. I have found that they don't do well in pots. Prepare your seed bed by cleaning out the weeds and slightly tilling the soil. Make sure Morning glories have something to climb on like a trellis or they will rot just sitting on the ground. So after you till your soil, stick a trellis in it. Morning Glories have a hard seed pod so you will need to soak them overnight in water before planting. Just distribute the soaked seeds in the prepared bed and using the flat part of a hoe or the palm… [cont.]

Why is it legal to sell morning glory seeds and plants?
Q. The Department of Agriculture classifies it as a noxious weed, and it costs farmers millions when they have to eradicate this from their fields. Yet, it is easy to buy morning glory seeds and plants, and there is no warning about how invasive the plant is. If someone in the neighborhood plants it, it will spread and then choke out other desirable vegetation. I am trying to eradicate it from my yard, and have pulled of thousands of the little vines. But when the source is an adjoining property, it appears to be an impossible task.

A. That's a really good question. I guess that's because mostly white people use them. The whole drug war is all race-related. The reason marijuana, cocaine, and heroin are illegal is because Black, Hispanic, and Asian people were the ones who originally used them. I know morning glories are hallucinogens, but they don't make a big stink about it.

A. There have been a lot of amazing IC champions including Shawn Michaels, Ric Flair, Jeff Hardy etc etc. I think the best IC champion of all time though was Chris Jericho. He won it 9 times thus far, more than anyone else and he had some epic matches while holding that title. Chris Jericho is a legend of WWE, he has so many great qualities and the best is his in ring ability, which is on another level than most people in WWE today. Jericho added so much prestige to the title, and that IC title added a lot of prestige to him. Like I said, he won it 9 times more than anyone else, so he's made history right there. Also, Jericho can make a match a classic, especially ladder matches. And he defended the IC title in some of the best matches ever.… [cont.]

How many morning glory seeds do you have to eat for it to equal one hit of lsd?
Q. My friend wants to get an lsd-like effect from eating morning glory seeds, because buying lsd off the street isn't always safe. How many seed should he eat for it to equal one hit of regular lsd?
Asked by David H - Sun Sep 27 10:08:56 2009 - Chemistry - 3 Answers - Comments

A. It would take 250 seeds to equal a dose of lsd. 1 seed contains about 1mg of LSA. So 250 seeds would be about 250mg of LSA. LSA is about 10x weaker than LSD. So 250 seeds would equal 250 mg LSA or 250 micrograms of LSD. 250 micrograms is 1 standard hit. Beware, some companies put anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agents into the seeds to prevent them from going bad this can cause nausea and/or vomiting. If you can find organic seeds you won't have to worry about this.

How To Get Rid of Morning Glory?
Q. Short of constantly ripping the stuff out, does anyone have a good (organic) sollution to this plant? There seems to be morning glory that grows in between my yard and the neighbours' yards. We all pull the stuff, but it just keeps coming back. If I miss one weekend of gardening, the stuff starts to strangle my azalias and blueberry bushes!
Asked by Susan F - Tue May 15 12:36:08 2007 - Garden & Landscape - 6 Answers - Comments

A. Do you get NPR? This sounds like an ideal question for Mike on You Bet Your Garden. (The website is - you can email questions or call.) Problems with this plant are twofold - one, vine plant, two, self-sowing. So, not only do you have to rip it out and kill the roots, you have to stop the seeds from spreading. This is probably not going to happen in one season, though. Your basic strategy is to exhaust the plant by cutting the foliage back, keep flowers off of it so it can't seed, then cover the soil so everything there dies back. It will try and move on you! You've got the right idea, but yeah, it's exhausting.

Does anyone know how to get rid of morning glory?
Q. I have a large garden and it is being overrun by morning glory. When I put the garden in I was healthy but since then I have developed fibromyalgia. I am limited in what I can now do. Last summer, I didn't do much and in back of our fence there is a green space that has morning glory and blackberries bushes. Because I didn't cut them back as I usually did they have encroached on the yard, both the morning glory and the blackberries grew through the fence and rooted where they touched the ground. So really I need help with both of these problem plants. Did I mention the ivy that is also finding its way into my garden?

A. All 3 of your problems can be eliminated by using "Brush-B-Gone" or "Brush Killer"...which contains the active ingredient called "TRICLOPYR". It is a selective herbicide that controls broadleaved plants without harming grassy types (including turf). Triclopyr works very similar to Roundup by killing the roots after spraying the foliage. I've found it to do an excellent job on brush and vine species. When spraying, you should make sure not to spray when the temperatures exceed 80 degrees and to avoid any sprays to get onto ornamental plants and vegetables. To achieve better results, try mixing a tablespoon of dishsoap into your sprayer AFTER mixing the Triclopyr and water. The dishsoap helps allow more of the… [cont.]

Why do my Morning Glory sparklers just produce a flame, rather than a shower of sparks?
Q. I have some 10" Morning Glory sparklers; the Safe and Sane, California legal kind. Rather than producing a bunch of sparks, they produce a torch-like flame and just a few sparks. Is this supposed to happen? How can I fix it?
Asked by Jason E - Sun Jul 3 02:12:10 2011 - Independence Day - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Any sort of burn characteristic of the sparklers is chemically based. This could be a case of insufficient metal particles in the slurry. The first thing to do is check what sort of sparklers you bought in the first place. Are they the paper wrappy king or the solid sort with a metal stick? The paper sort tend to give off only a few sparks but burn with a torch-like colored flame with possible colored smoke. The solid sort tend to have a more sparkle based burn. If it's the paper wrapped kind this may be the average function of your sparklers and nothing is wrong. Whatever the cause there's no way to fix it without a chemistry lab. As it's illogical to fix something intended for burning and which only costs a dollar or two just get some… [cont.]

Asked by cm - Thu Mar 20 16:48:34 2008 - Garden & Landscape - 6 Answers - Comments

A. I am guessing you are zone 6-7? Maybe 7b? If so, then the last week in April. Morning Glories are good even if the soil is poor, but you should test your soil before any planting. Morning Glories do not transplant well, so direct sowing is recommended. You will want to soak them overnight first. Do NOT confuse this with what the gentlemen below me is referring to, which is wild Morning Glory or Bindweed(which we in CT call-Bindweed) they are two different species. It will reseed itself depending on conditions. You can save your seeds very easily for planting in other areas. Do you know when your last frost usually falls? I am in zone 6a-6b, and ours is the 2nd to 3rd week in May, depending on the full moon.
