Traditionally, a glossary appears at the end of a book and includes terms within that book which are either newly introduced or at least uncommon. A bilingual glossary is a list of terms in one language which are defined in a second language or glossed by synonyms (or at least near-synonyms) in another language. In a general sense, a glossary contains explanations of concepts relevant to a certain field of study or action. In this sense, the term is contemporaneously related to ontology. Core glossaryA core glossary is a simple glossary or defining dictionary which enables definition of other concepts, especially for newcomers to a language or field of study. GNU Free Documentation License Are the definitions from a textbook glossary (consisting of common terms) protected by copyright laws? Q. For some definitions it is hard to really say it any other way then what is found in someones glossary. I do realize a dictionary would be protected (as a unique collection), but not sure how far that pertains to a glossary of terms at the back of a book. Asked by Aks - Wed Apr 23 20:07:22 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. A glossary certainly can have copyrightable aspects including, among other things, the definitions as well as the organization of the glossary. That said, copyright does NOT protect works consisting entirely of information that is common property and containing no original authorship (e.g., standard calendars, height and weight charts, tape measures and rulers, and lists or tables taken from public documents or other common sources). Without seeing the glossary, it's impossible to say how much of it is copyrightable. Copyright analysis is a fact specific inquiry. You might consider contacting a copyright attorney if this issue is important to you. Answered by ron_mexico - Thu Apr 24 13:08:01 2008 where can I find a complete pirate dictionary/glossary online?
