What radioisotope makes watch hands glow in the dark?
Q. So I did this practical about the penetrating power of radiation, and there's a question which asks: "Some watches use emitting radioisotopes to make the hands glow in the dark. Comment on the safety implications of this method." So there's this gap between 'use' and 'emitting' and it think its supposed to say alpha, beta or gamma (but with the symbol). I can answer the question if I knew what kind of radioisotope made the watch hands glow and what kind of emitter it is. So any help would be appreciated.

A. There have been a few different compounds used to luminesce watch markers. Most modern quality watches used Luminova, a brand name for a Strontium Oxide Aluminate compound. Ball watch uses Tritium micro gas tubes, which do not require charging, but will stop glowing as the radioactivity of the tritium runs out. Some older style watches used a Radium based compound for their glow paints.

Q. I want a glow in the dark tongue ring but every time I get one it stops glowing shortly after I get it.. I don't even think they glow in my mouth.. What can I do to maintain the glow??.. I saw a girl in the club once and hers was glowing perfectly.. Any suggestions??

A. A lot of glow in the dark things only glow after they're in light for a while...they sort of build up their glow. Try leaving one of those rings under a lamp (that's turned on) for a while and then see if it glows in the dark better.

What causes ice to sometimes glow when cracked?
Q. I have personally witnessed that ice under certain conditions will glow or "spark", ie: emit a small flash of light, when broken This has happened numerous times when cracking ice cube trays in the dark. Does it have to do with the composition of the ice (metals in solution, etc) or perhaps temperature/humidity?
Asked by danfish_77 - Tue Jul 28 15:55:10 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. When light enters the edge of the crack at anything less than 45 degrees, the light gets bounced around inside the glass because the angle of incidence and angle of reflection is causing the inside light to bounce off both inside surfaces of the glass. Of course some light breaks out of the inside of the glass but the light that remains inside of the pane bounces from top inside surface to bottom inside surface until it is diffused to weakness Take a sheet of glass and shine a flashlight parallel at the edge at nightime and you will see the glass glow if you vary the angle of light a little

How exactly does La source body glow work?
Q. I bought a tube of La Source Moisturizing body glow from crabtree&evelyn. I am of wheatish complexion and little tanned due to the summer activities and thought it would even out the skin tone. But I am not sure how exactly it work. Will this give me a tanned look, which I am not really looking forward to? Does this product actually help in evening out the skin tone? Thank you for all the help in advance.

A. it's a gradual tanner. basically if you put it on for a few days, you'll notice you get a little darker (not a lot darker). it doesnt work immediately though. it also makes your tan last way longer. i hope it works good for you :)

How do you know that a handheld glow plug is fouled up or not working?
Q. I just got a starter kit for my nitro car and the glow plug came with it. I have already used it about 4 times and it worked before. However, the last couple times I have not been able to get the car to start. I read before that glow plugs will sometimes foul up during the breaking in process. I was just wondering how you know for sure.

A. If you pull it out and hook up the bat it should glow all the way to the tip if one or two of the coils is not light it will not get hot enough to work well also some times the motor will run at idle but not any goodat mid or top end

Q. I have an old fire exit sign from japan that apparently used to glow in the dark. A. ...Oh I was going to say lick it, daily and see if your hair falls out, or if you get other illnesses associated with heavy metal toxicities and radiation exposure. Another option would be to get a device used to measure the radioactivity of something. You've probably seen the old ones on tv which makes that rattling noise. There are a number of devices, an electroscope, a could chamber and others. You could also just contact a local university and ask about their capabilities or contact the cops or poison control and ask how to check and get rid of it. If you've had it for awhile, you would have known if if were radioactive I suspect, but then again, it depends on a number of factors.

A. There are various ways of doing it. The most common way is by using a paint that absorbs radiation from light and then slowly releases it. Invicta for example uses Trinite, which is their trademark name for that paint. The problem is that it doesn't glow for too long and it is generally not too bright. The other method of doing this, and this is generally only done on higher-end watches such as Ball, they insert vials with tritium on the parts that need to glow. The vials are coated with phosphor, the phosphor then lights up due to the radiation of the tritum. Tritium is chemically, H3. The glow will last up to 26 years sometimes. The problem with these watches is that since they do contain radioactive material, they must be licensed by… [cont.]

A. The glow stick reaction is an example of chemilumenescence. The chemical reaction in a light stick involves several different steps. Commercial light sticks holds a hydrogen peroxide solution and a solution containing a phenyl oxalate ester and a fluorescent dye. The following is the sequence for the reaction when the solutions are combined: 1. The hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the phenyl oxalate ester, resulting in a phenol and an unstable peroxyacid ester. 2. The unstable peroxyacid ester decomposes, resulting in additional phenol cyclic peroxy conpound. 3. The cyclic peroxy compound decomposes to carbon dioxide. 4. This decomposition releases energy to the dye. 5. The electrons in the dye atoms jump to a higher energy level, then… [cont.]

A. Hey there are many products similar to the Neutrogena glow, you could also try Dove, Johnson and Johnson, Vani-t or St Tropez who offer similar products. They are a moisturiser with a small amount of fake tan, you apply every day and the colour develops subtly. Once you reach your desired colour you then use the product every second or third day to keep it. You can also try a spray tan, start with the lightest colour and no one will know it is fake!
