Are there any poker tournaments in St Albans or Hertfordshire?
Q. Would like to find a cool place to play live poker in hertfordshire. Would prefer tournaments to cash games.

A. There is a Rileys in Stevenage that is currently running a league, A 10 freezeout + A 3 towards the league final on Sunday nights, 7pm start. It's been running a while so you don't stand a chance with the league but it's cheap poker and local to you. I'm having the same problem as you, apart from Rileys there aren't many places to play. G Casino in luton has a good selection of games but they are a little pricey (A 40 freezeout is the cheapest or a A 10 re-buy but they are just fish fests). Let me know if you have any luck finding some others. I have a few mates in the area so if you find anything good we can add another 4-5 players to it :-) if you have any mates who like to play, I have been thinking about starting a little… [cont.]

How would i go about canoeing from Manchester to Hertfordshire using canals?
Q. I own two canoes, and all going to plan, this summer 4 of us will be canoeing down to Herts from Manchester. It is physically do-able using canals. But we're wondering what laws/ licences would hold us back? Obviously this is going to take a lot of planning but i was just wondering if anyone could outline the details about how to go about it. i.e. what water licence would we need? are we even allowed to do it? etc thankyou thankyou!

A. Here are some links that should help: - Guide to British canals and rivers. - Information on licensing boats in canals managed by British Waterways. - Rivers Access Campaign, with information about the access situation in England and Wales. - BCU, with links to local clubs and other information.

I am trying to find out if anyone knows any good cat breeders in Hertfordshire/East London area's?
Q. Thank you Michele you are the only person who as seen, that i have looked at the R.S.P.C.A before i went looking at breeders, but when i went there they only had cats that are to old for us, as i have a young puppy and young children, or when i looked at the kittens, i got told they were not allowed with young children under the age of 5, which my youngest daughter is only 2 and also not allowed again with dogs.
Asked by Lynsey W - Fri Nov 9 10:45:53 2007 - - 4 Answers - Comments

A. As others have suggested, animal rescue groups always need good homes for cats, but I see from one of your previous questions that you've already tried the R.S.P.C.A. The Cat World web site has a link where you can select breeders by area. I don't know if you have a specific breed in mind, but there are rescues specialising in particular breeds, and you can search those on-line. The link below is a list of all the cat rescue shelters in the UK and you can search that by area.

How do I dispose of old carpets (in Hertfordshire)?
Q. I checked the council's website, the wasteaware website, etc., etc., and it's all driving me round the bend. There seems to be nowhere to dipose of carpets - all the rubbish tips they list are waste recycling centres. How do I get even a list of tips that take carpets in Herts? I don't want to pay the council to come to collect it when I can take it myself.

A. in our recycling depots they have a skip for general rubish you just dump the carpet in that skip

A. In the 1620s King Charles I commissioned the famous Dutch land drainer, Cornelius Vermuyden, to drain a huge area of marshland in the north-west of Lincolnshire, in the area that is now called the Isle of Axholme. Many of the settlers who were employed to carry this out work were religious refugees, Huguenots from France and Walloons and Flemings from what is now Belgium, persecuted in their home countries for their Protestant beliefs. However, the local population was extremely hostile to the newcomers, who were changing their landscape and way of life. In 1642 "they arose in tumults, brake down the fences and inclosures of four thousand Acres, destroyed all the corn growing, and demolished the Houses built thereon." Having… [cont.]

A. The Grand Union Canal with a public towpath for you to walk on flows through Hertfordshire from Rickmansworth via Cassiobury Park (Watford), Kings Langley, Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamstead, Tring etc. All these places have railway stations (Rickmansworth - Chiltern Rail from London Marylebone). Otherwise all on the London Euston to Northampton line

how long does it take to obtain planning permission in hertfordshire?
Q. i would like to obtain planning permission for a 4 bedroom bungalow, how long should it take and cost?
Asked by pandora - Sun Jan 24 10:54:47 2010 - - 2 Answers - Comments

A. The cost of a consultant to act on your behalf and draw plans depends on numerous factors, the site, its constraints, the local authority and its policies and the type of application that is pursued (full or outline) etc. The time again depends on numerous factors, however the local planning authority should determine an application within 8 weeks of registration; the local authority application fee in England is currently A 335 for a new dwelling. We offer a national service and would happily advise further and provide a quote.

I am looking for places in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire to conduct ghost hunting investigations.?
Q. Myself and a small team of amateur ghost hunters are looking for haunting buildings in and around Biggleswade or the bedfordshire/Herfordshire area that we may conduct an investigation into. This would mean an overnight stay at the property. We are looking for not just homes but business premises and graveyards/cemeteries. Are you the owner or do you know the owners of such properties and would it be possible to enter said premises to conduct an investigation.
