The horse (Equus ferus caballus) is a hooved (ungulate) mammal, a subspecies of the family Equidae. The horse has evolved over the past 45 to 55 million years from a small multi-toed creature into the large, single-toed animal of today. Humans began to domesticate horses around 4000 BC, and their domestication is believed to have been widespread by 3000 BC. Although most horses today are domesticated, there are still endangered populations of the Przewalski's Horse, the only remaining true wild horse, as well as more common populations of feral horses which live in the wild but are descended from domesticated ancestors. There is an extensive, specialized vocabulary used to describe equine-related concepts, covering everything from anatomy to life stages, size, colors, markings, breeds, locomotion, and behaviour. Horses' anatomy enables them to make use of speed to escape predators and they have a well-developed sense of balance and a strong fight-or-flight instinct. Related to this need to flee from predators in the wild is an unusual trait: horses are able to sleep both standing up and lying down. Female horses, called mares, carry their young for approximately 11 months, and a young horse, called a foal, can stand and run shortly following birth. Most domesticated horses begin training under saddle or in harness between the ages of two and four. They reach full adult development by age five, and have an average lifespan of between 25 and 30 years. Horse breeds are loosely divided into three categories based on general temperament: spirited "hot bloods" with speed and endurance; "cold bloods", such as draft horses and some ponies, suitable for slow, heavy work; and "warmbloods", developed from crosses between hot bloods and cold bloods, often focusing on creating breeds for specific riding purposes, particularly in Europe. There are over 300 breeds of horses in the world today, developed for many different uses. Horses and humans interact in a wide variety of sport competitions and non-competitive recreational pursuits, as well as in working activities such as police work, agriculture, entertainment, and therapy. Horses were historically used in warfare, from which a wide variety of riding and driving techniques developed, using many different styles of equipment and methods of control. Many products are derived from horses, including meat, milk, hide, hair, bone, and pharmaceuticals extracted from the urine of pregnant mares. Humans provide domesticated horses with food, water and shelter, as well as attention from specialists such as veterinarians and farriers. From Wikipedia under the

From Google Video Search: "horses" How do you stop a dog from chasing horses? Q. My brother-in-law and his dog live on the same property as me. She barks and chases my horses and bites their legs. We have already had the vet out to take care of a bite wound she caused and now we have another horse injured because of her. My brother-in-law will not do anything to stop her behavior. We live on a farm. He doesn't believe in tying dogs up or putting them in a kennel. She is the worst when someone pulls in the yard in a vehicle or if she thinks the horses are getting too close to the fence. Any suggestions for me? Asked by Laurie - Thu Sep 24 13:36:43 2009 - - 9 Answers - 1 Comments A. Well since it is your brother-in-law, you live on the same property I am assuming that you have already talked to him so maybe you should just fix it so the dog will not get into the pasture. One of our dogs likes to chase the horses (never bit them but annoying) so we ran electric fence almost at ground level, and then between each of the fence rails (wood fence). I assure you that once a dog gets zapped once or twice they will give up on the idea of getting in the pasture and chasing the horses. Keeps the coyotes out too and isn't very expensive to do (we use the fence chargers that work on D batteries so no electric to run). Answered by McSween - Thu Sep 24 14:39:04 2009 What is the best way to keep a horses hooves from becoming too dry, even with the regular use of hoof oil?
Q. We have a little debate in the stable where i work, I say that too much washing and water will gradually make the horses hooves them dry, we should continue to oil the hoof regularly and avoid water as much as possible, but another employee insists that we should wash the horses hooves every day regardless, whether they are dirty or not! She seems to think water will moisten the hooves. I would really like to learn what is right, as I only want the best for the horses and to stop the hooves being so dry. Any suggestions? Asked by peee x - Fri Mar 30 14:26:01 2007 - - 12 Answers - Comments A. washing your horses hoofs unnecessarily will crack and dry them out i have event horses and unless its necessary never wash there hooves i never use hoof oil either unless I'm competing and use a hoof wax just to shine the hoof it drys the hoof out and causes more problems in the long run,i use a product called farriers formula in there feed it has biotin and strengthens there hooves its in pellet form and you add it to the feed and it promotes healthy hoof growth and strengthens there hoof its a supplement Ive been using for years and its made my horses feet crack free and prevents them loosing shoes.another product i use is called keraton its a paint on liquid which also strengthens the hoof, its expensive but it is applied once a week… [cont.] Answered by Daniel is due 27/3/09 - Fri Mar 30 16:32:53 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "horses" |
