What is the best way to set up an internet forum?
Q. Hi there, I am interested in setting up an internet forum, specifications as follows: - It must be free of charge - It must be password accessible only - It would be handy to be able to email all the members from time to time - It would be nice (though not essential) to make it look pretty! Any links or advice would be much appreciated!

Can I face legal action for slandering a company in an internet forum?
Q. I would like to know the situation about leaving negative feedback about a company in an internet forum. Would they be able to sue me for doing this and if they could, if I was to remain anonymous then what could they do? Just a note to Andrew, I of course do have better things to do with my time, but I think people have a right to know what a company does and how they treat their customers before they make a decision to purchase.

Should Internet forum trolling be a crime punishable under international law?
Q. Sadly, forum trolling has become more and more common, evidently because trolls find it funny and satisfying. However, it is extremely disturbing how often these individuals are actually taken seriously. A troll today, who once trolled "for the lulz", now trolls for the e-fame and e-fortune. It seems therefore fitting to criminalize this petty, useless and self-serving behavior, in the hopes that legitimate Internet users will no longer be plagued with the constant annoyance called "trolls."

A. It depends what you mean by "public" - if it's sponsored by a public entity (government, school, etc.), you would have to go to whoever is in charge. That could be the municipal government, or the principal, or the board, or others, depending on who it is. If by "public" you mean "open to the public", there's probably not a whole lot you can do if it's a privately-run entity. Any specific threats could be reported to the relevant law enforcement authority, but beyond that nobody would have a legal basis to stop them.

A. The copyright law provides that the creator of the work--i.e., the person who wrote the post or the letter--owns the copyright. This right attaches the moment the work is created 17 USC 102. The blog creaor has a license to display the derivative work, i.e., the blog or forum, but has no copyright in the contributed work. 17 USC 103. These rules apply in virtually every country on earth thanks to the Berne Convention.

A. Yes, Moderators and admins have access to tools which allow them to view the IP address of any member or guest, using this IP they can use a separate tool to view that IP's history including other sign-ups and posts.

Internet forum will not allow me to post a comment?
Q. There is a Internet forum I visit sometimes and today for some reason I cannot post comments. I can look at anything else I want and all the other buttons and links work fine. But once I write a comment and click "Post" nothing happens. The "post" button will not respond to my click. Others are still posting on the site so I know its not the site.. its my computer. What can I adjust to fix this?

What type internet forum would be popular to start?
Q. Hello everyone! I am wanting to start my own internet forum, and I was just wondering what interesting topics would draw everyday internet users in. I would like it to be clean, and wanted to know what others like.
Asked by Andrew - Tue Jan 11 12:26:45 2011 - Other - Internet - 3 Answers - Comments

A. There are so much topics it's hard to say, I guess the best solution would be to go with your interests and hope that others also share that interest. You have a couple of categories, there are help forums, theses are popular because it's easier to get help from the internet than everywhere else. There are general topics forums where people start discussions on anything, usually ending up in debate that won't stay "clean". And finally there are the "fans" forums, based on a subject, most people that subscribe will be "fans" of something...whether it's race cars, a pc game or anything, you'll get quality users because they "like" that subject. You'll usually get more constructive discussions on this… [cont.]

How Difficult is it to Sue Over Internet forum slander/libel?
Q. Somebody has said something slanderous about me and my company in another forum and it is not completely true, although some claims are! Is suing them a realistic option? Or would I be better off just asking the forum to remove the post which one forum already did and the other did not. At this point the one post that's removed I can't do much about that correct? What can be done about the remaining post? Is there any way to find out who made these claims or would it be too time consuming and costly? Any help is appreciated thanks.
Asked by Jason Richards - Sun Aug 7 21:05:50 2011 - Law & Ethics - 3 Answers - Comments

A. Defamation of character is extremely difficult to prove. You must prove the person intentionally and maliciously spread rumors about you that were not true. You have to prove it wasn't just their opinion or they thought what they were saying was true. You also have to prove you had financial damages as a direct result of what they said. An internet forum isn't going to spread to many audiences and is unlikely to have caused you actual damages. To find out what made those claims would be nearly impossible and very costly to you. It would probably cost you more to investigate than what you could collect if you had real damages, which I doubt you did.

What do you do when people bitch at you on an internet forum?
Q. I got lit up for "thread jacking"! Oooo... I must admit I'm a little annoyed. I'm kind of new to internet edicit. Is there a term for an overly proactive moderator, posters who complain about stuff like this and idiots who get on your back about using the search function and starting too many threads? Jeff P reminds me of Napolean in cute had.
Asked by 15fsg546rge1rrheljh45hjr90459ty3 - Sun Aug 9 11:20:17 2009 - Other - Internet - 2 Answers - Comments

A. It depends entirely upon the forum. Im the moderator of an MMORPG forum and we have strict rules in place which many new members can find difficult to follow or even understand somtimes. Most forums from my experience take getting used to - you need to feel them out, see for yourself whats acceptable and what is not. Most of the time if you slip up and do something they dont like you just get a verbal warning, and you learn from your mistake. In general, dont make multiple threads in a row - it looks like spam even when its not. Always use search function for similar threads cause some people love to mini-mod (pretend they are mods) and pick apart everything hoping to look important and smart. And if someone flames you, report them. Don't… [cont.]

Asked by Quizmaster - Fri Dec 26 11:18:31 2008 - Yahoo! Answers - 1 Answers - Comments

A. That will be pretty hard to answer. Probably the people on the busiest forums like that aren't also kicking back on Yahoo Answers. I've seen people with a lot higher post counts, but I'm pretty sure those people are being paid to post and pretend to have an interest in the web site. That's called sponsored blogging, but you have to be really subtle about it or people will catch on and get angry.

Q. I'm trying to get more North American, and Australian posters on an internet forum or messageboard that's primarily UK based. What are some ideas to attract them to posting at the forum regularly? 10 pts to best answer!

A. Find issues which are of common interest to persons in all those countries. Speaking for myself, Americans are not interested in UK football matches or talking about the monarchy, so the general topics need to be much broader in nature.

Is there an Internet forum or website for people interested in old cemeteries?
Q. I'm a history buff and like to visit very old cemeteries online and in person, particularly 19th century or earlier in the U.S. I used to live in a community where our church cemetery had many laid to rest who had served in the Civil War and died on the battlefield, etc. Is there a forum, discussion group, or website you know of devoted to this interest?
Asked by Bella - Sun Oct 21 03:04:29 2007 - History - 3 Answers - Comments

A. There certainly should be. I've been surfing the web since the late 1990s and have come across hundreds of cemeteries in the States. Some are the burial grounds of American Veterans of the Revolution, including a few Loyalist Brits by the way. Also lots of sites of cemetaries for the Civil War etc. Try these sites : - US Cemeteries National Cemetery System (Dept. of Veterans Affairs); Cemetery and Graveyard Burial Records and Tombstone Inscriptions Cemetery Junction: United States ... Cemeteries of the United States of America - American Cemetery ...A free online library of burial records from thousands of cemeteries across the world, ... Cemeteries of the United States. Browse Cemeteries by State ... Salem, NY Revolutionary War Cemetary… [cont.]
