Medicine for delayed menstruation?
Q. Hi there! I'm quite worried about my situation and i hope someone can help me! I've always had irregular menstruation ever since i started my periods when i was 12; i can miss periods for durations ranging from 1 week to 3 months and i'm now already 20. My last period was in march this year and i went to see a doctor to see whether there's any medicine i could take to regulate or make my menses come. He gave me 2 kinds of medicine. Ferrous fumarate 200mg (for iron deficiency) and Norethisterone 5mg. I had taken them for 3 days now and nothing has happened yet. I was wondering whether anyone has had the experience or knowledge of these medicine can tell me whether they work? Please do help! I am so worried! Thank u all in advance!

A. I'm 24 yrs old and I've always had abnormal periods and my OB/GYN tells me to take birth control. I haven't decided to start it yet, but supposedly birth control makes your period more "regular", BUT it can have side effects of its own, i.e. makes you moodier, weight gain, etc. Perhaps you should see an OB/GYN for this...gl

Can I take organic blackstrap molasses instead of iron pills? I'm anemic and don't want to take these pills?
Q. I was in the hospital last week because I've been menstruating heavily for quite some time. Doctor put me on hormonal therapy for 5 days along with some iron pills - Ferrous Sulfate- I finished my hormonal course, which was supposed to stop my period and regulate my cycle but didn't help at all. I am bleeding very very heavily and I'm so tired and scared. I need some iron and these pills I don't want to take because I hate taking medicine and it has a lot of side effects like upset stomach and constipation and this and that. I was just wondering if I could just take a spoonful of organic blackstrap molasses a day to help with my iron deficiency? Any suggestions or advice would be so highly appreciated. Thank you.

A. Take the pills. Crush them up in apple sauce if you have to. Some minor side effects are better than losing too much blood, obviously.

Did you hear reports are back on the cause of Brittany Murphy's death?
Q. No, she did not die of a heart attack, drug overdose, or anorexia. And although reports said she died of cardiac arrest, everyone dies of cardiac arrest. Reports have just came back that the primary cause of death was pneumonia. She also had iron-deficiency anemia (which is very common), that also attributed to her death. Reports also said she has been taking hydrocodone with ibuprofen and Prozac as well as OTC cough medicine, however this was not the cause of her death.

A. Bless you heart lilcutie. I know you are terribly frightened. The best thing to do is to telephone your doctor and ask him why he referred you to the other doctors. Hopefully he will be able to answer some of your questions. Unless a YA member is a doctor you can't really get any medical advice here. You can get our best wishes and support. Good luck and get well soon.

I have a great dane, he is very ill, suggestions required from pet owners or vets?
Q. My dog, E.T., had severe problems at a young age(now he's 5), when I got him he was three months & started getting bad right after I got him. He stopped eating, had frequent fever, became very weak & had problems in passing stool & sometimes had blood in stool too.The doctors suggested that he had Iron deficiency right from birth.I also came to know that ET had a sibling that had died too because of Iron deficiency at the same time when ET got ill and because of similar symptoms as those of ET. He was given various injections for a period of seven days but there was no recovery, at last I tried some homoepathic medicines and they worked and he recovered and has been fine till recently(he's 5 now). But from the last month he is again ill with… [cont.]

Women with cravings...check it out!!!?
Q. For many women, powerful food cravings for certain foods come with the territory during pregnancy. You've probably heard tales of loved ones being dispatched at all hours to search for a certain brand of bacon double cheeseburger or rocky road ice cream to quell an expectant mom's desire. Perhaps you've felt an overwhelming urge to splurge firsthand. Truth is, nobody is sure why some women have pregnancy food cravings. "Some experts say cravings, and their flip side, food aversions, are protective, even if there is no scientific data to back up that theory," says Siobhan Dolan, MD, assistant medical director of the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation and assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology and women's health at Albert… [cont.]

Anyone that can give me advice on my anemia.?
Q. I have three types of Anemia. Aplastic, Iron-Deficiency, and I just found out TODAY that I have Sickle Cell Anemia. No one else in my family has Anemia, so it's not genetic, and I dont get how I keep on getting different types of it, I started out with just Aplastic, and then I got the other two over a span of 11 to 12 years. I take my iron pills, but they really dont help, especially when it comes to me bruising like a banana. And my doctor is a douche and wont tell me anything, like what I can do to slow my anemia down, because I would hate to end up with four or more types of it. Can someone tell me, foods I can eat, or medicines that i can take that will help me? Thanks.

A. You may be experiencing a sinus infection. Treatment requires a strong antibiotic (Ceflaxin type). Drinking water to dilute the mucus might help, but try an allergy pill like Allerest or Sudafed until you get a prescription. Sometimes the internet can provide too much information. Without a proper diagnosis by a doctor it would be impossible to know how to treat the problem. Go. The studying and memory issues could be something as simple as focusing too much on your symptoms and what all the 'information' is suggesting as your 'diagnosis'. If you know you are vitamin deficient, get yourself a good multivitamin (One-A-Day) that has a full range of the B vitamins especially, as well as all the others including Iron and Biotin. And… [cont.]

Persistent Muscle Spasms, Elevated Blood Pressure and Feeling exhausted?
Q. Does anyone have a clue why a 43 year old female would have painful spasms in the throat, back, and inside (maybe uterus or intestines) that have come slowly over time but now are horrible especially when I'm on my period. My blood pressure is really high 170/110 at the worst. Now prior to this episode it was 139/90 most of the time. I'm taking Altace 2x's a day but it never really seemed to do anything and I've been using it for a few years. I feel exhausted all the time and the constant pain is making me grumpy. I did have low ferritin and iron back in August and my GP convinced me go to the gastro who did an endoscopy/colonoscopy and found ulcers in the lower intestines. I was supposed to go back for a small bowel series but I didn't… [cont.]

A. Hello. First off, blood pressure can temporarily increase for many reasons, such as anxiety or pain. If you were in pain from these spasms or anxious then this could explain the elevated blood pressure. Some people can have elevated BP at the doctor's office known as white coat hypertension, but their BP is normal elsewhere. I think your BP was elevated secondary to some temporary increase due to pain and/or anxiety especially since it was much lower when checked at another time. A onetime elevated BP is nothing to panic about as long as you do not have chest pain, shortness of breath, visual changes or stroke like symptoms. The most common cause of muscle spasms is a musculoskeletal issue and this commonly occurs in the low back. This is… [cont.]
