What can I do about anemia during pregnancy besides taking iron pills?
Q. I'm 19 weeks and recently came out anemic in a blood test, but the problem is I am still having nausea every night and iron pills make me completely sick to my stomach. What else can I do? Which foods have the most iron besides red meat? I'm sooo tired all the time.

A. ask your doctor for an IV of iron . i would have done one while i was pregnet but i had some problems and had to deliver my baby early. HE really wanted me to do one once a week for the rest of my pregnancy but like i said i had some complications and had to deliver early. but thats what the plan was

I cannot have anymore children but I am taking prenatal pills for the iron, is anything wrong with that?
Q. I could just go and buy iron pills but I have prenatal pill here so I take them. People often question why, i am not pregnant and do not plan to get pregnant. But if there is nothing wrong with it than why not.

A. I don't think anything is wrong with that. There are so many good things in prenatal vitamins! I take them everyday and I don't plan on getting pregnant for a couple years. Nothing wrong with getting a little extra.

What happens if you take Iron pills if you are not anemic?
Q. i honestly Truly believe that i am anemic so i have iron pills but i dont wanna take them if they are gonna cause harm to me. and before anyone says anything i would go to the doctor but with my schedule i dont have time

A. Be cautious with iron supplements, there are many reasons for fatigue if this is why you believe you are anemic. Iron doesn't flush out like say vitamin C so overload is possible and can be toxic. I am borderline anemic and know that I can get an energy boost from canned shellfish like mussels or oysters from the iron in them. But if I take the supplement "Ferrous Sulfate" everyday I get constipated. The green pill, "ferrous gluctonate" doesn't do that but is a bit more expensive. Also be aware calcium and iron don't absorb together. I think the calcium blocks the iron. It is a delicate balance. When you can, schedule the Doctor's appointment, it is a simple blood test to see if you are anemic. Don't take the supplement for a few… [cont.]

Q. I am enemic and i have to take iron pills. everytime i do they make me throw up with or with out food! How can i resolve this?
Asked by Brittnay V - Sat Oct 4 14:08:10 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Throw them away. Too much iron is dangerous for a pregnant women as it can cause constipation and high blood pressure. You will have plenty of iron in your high quality prenatal vitamin and mineral. To treat anemia during pregnancy you must increase your protein and fresh vegetables. When you snack, snack on protein. Have a protein snack before you go to bed at night with a glass of water. Take a look at Dr. Brewer's work for dealing with this through what you eat during pregnancy below. Best wishes, G

Can folic acid 5mg pills help increase my iron level ?
Q. I am low in iron. I have not gone to the doctor yet. So , will the folic acid 5mg tablet help increase my iron level back to normal ? And whats the different between folic acid pills and iron pills ?

A. How do you know you are low in iron if you haven't been to the doctor? If you suspect anaemia you should get tested by your doctor...there are other forms of anaemia...not just iron deficiency anaemia. You need your doctor to tell you if it is iron deficiency anaemia, or vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency anaemias. These are the main ones. You need to know this first and foremost so you know how to treat it. Am just wondering if you are confusing folic acid with vitamin C. It is vitamin C that if taken together with a source of non-haeme iron increases its absorption. Also, if it was iron deficiency anaemia, you would want organic iron in supplemental form and not inorganic iron. Don't buy inorganic iron (as found in many multivitamin/m [cont.]

A. Iron deficiency anemia is very common, especially among women. For mild anemia, an over the counter vitamin supplement containing iron is usually sufficient, although your doctor may give you a prescription iron supplement if he/she feels it is necessary. Iron supplements can irritate your stomach, so although you may be told to take them on an empty stomach, you may find that you need to take them with food. It's a good idea to take iron supplements with a food rich in vitamin C, as it helps promote better absorption of the iron. Also, iron supplements can cause constipation, so drink plenty of water and add high fiber foods to your diet (fruits, veggies, whole grains) to help combat this. A. You have to take only the necessary calculated quantity of iron pills for the sufficient duration only orally. Too much may even in normal doses due to intolerance diarrohea or costipation, nausea vomiting, or pain in the stomach. Sometimes the blood cells may be destroyed. Too much of iron may affect the brain also and have the problems.

Using Estrostep Fe when youre the iron pills do you need a back up method of birth control?
Q. If you use the birthcontrol Estrostep FE properly, like take all of the active pills on time and such, when you get to the Iron pills do you need a back up method of birth control? I think the package says you don't, but I'm a bit paranoid, and was wondering about it.
Asked by dothedip - Mon Jul 9 13:03:26 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No. The purpose of those pills are to give you extra iron while you are on your cycle. They are mainly used to keep you taking pills on a 28 day cycle...active pills for 21 days and inactive for 7 days. It sounds like you are a very responsible young lady as long as you take a pill everyday at the same time there is no need for a back up method,( except for sti protection) hope this helps

is taking iron pills while you are pregnant safe?
Q. Im 28 weeks pregnant and i went to the doctor last week and they drew blood and it came back my iron was a little bit low, so my doctor called me in some iron pills. Im taking ferrous sulfate. But my question is, is taking iron pills harmful to the baby? Have any of you guys had to take iron pills?

A. Yes ma'am, it's perfectly safe. It's not harmful, it's actually good for both of you. They even make prenatal vitamins fortified with iron to supplement you and the baby with iron. The baby needs iron too, and if you're low on iron, the baby can't get any. So do not worry, it's good for both of you. Also, don't freak out, but your poop is going to become very dark, almost black, from taking these. It's completely normal.

Fortified breakfast cereals also contain reasonable iron content. For vegetarians, it is important to take along with their meals, orange juice, tomato salad or something else rich in vitamin C (citrus fruits, blackcurrant, vegetables (broccoli, potatoes), red capsicums and chilies, strawberry, kiwifruit, rock melon), which aids iron absorption from plant foods such as pulses and green leafy vegetables. A. i have had iron deficiency anemia since i was 12 due to heavy periods (a lot of women also have this) so i have been taking a multi-vitamin since i began menstruating to keep my iron levels up and i had no problems getting pregnant, in fact, when i found out i was pregnant i was told by my doctor to take 325 milligrams of iron in addition to my prenatal vitamin every day...i also put off taking the iron pills because i was told by some people that they can make constipation (which i have already had problems with during my pregnancy) worse but because i did not take them when i was told to my iron levels got really low so i started taking them about 1 month ago and i have not had any problems with my pregnancy... i do not believe that… [cont.]
