Japan has much less "wild nature" than e.g. the US. Japan is densely populated and industrialized, like Europe, therefore no bear, deers and elephants are on the street. You cannot see deers as roadkill - it is not like PA. So when people say that yes, we have monkeys here, it means that there are some special parks where you can see plenty, but beside that you most probably will not see even one if you don't live for longer time in some extremely deserted place. Kumamoto has nice nature around, it is true, you can make beautiful hikes, but you will see more cows than any bigger kind of wild animal. However, the fascinating point of that area may be rather natural beauty. Mt. Aso is the largest active volcano in Japan. It has the grand view.
