How would I find the average depth of a lake given surface area and volume?
Q. 71. Lake Victoria. Lake Victoria is Africa s largest lake and the second largest fresh-water lake in the world in terms of surface area. Its volume is approximately 2750 cubic kilometers and its surface area is 68,800 square kilometers. a. What is the average depth of the lake (the depth of a box with the volume and surface area of the lake)? b. In the last six years, the water level of the lake has dropped 10 feet (from the depth computer in part a). Approximately how much water has the lake lost? c. What percentage of the volume (2750 cubic kilometers) has been lost? are area and surface area the same thing?

A. a) Average depth is just the volume divided by the area. 2750/68800 = 0.03997km = 39.97 meters b) Volume of water lost is change in depth*area (assuming the surface area didn't shrink along with the depth) 10 feet = 0.003048 kilometers .003048*68800 = 209.7 cubic kilometers c) divide the lost volume from b) by the original volume (2750) and express as a percent by multiplying by 100. 209.7/2750 = 0.0763 = 7.63% ...

What is the best way to catch fish in this lake?
Q. The 1,275-acre Lake Marburg is a warm-water fishery. Popular species are yellow perch, bluegill, northern pike, crappie, largemouth bass, catfish, muskellunge and tiger muskellunge. Bow fishing is permitted in the shallow cove areas. Lake Marburg is in the Big Bass Program. Large and smallmouth bass must be a minimum of 15 inches long to be harvested and the daily limit is four fish of either species, combined.

A. I have spoken to several others who have fished this lake and they have said that the best method is to get near the bridges in deeper water and throw live minnows. All species of gamefish will take a minnow. Now if you are fishing walleye and/or crappie, jigs tipped with grubs and/or minnows have been said to take fish. I have heard that the best time is in the evening. I don't know much about the lake myself, but am trying to recall what I have heard other anglers say in regards to the fishing. Hope this helps and if you do decide to go fishing there...good luck and tight lines!

How can I remove two Japanese Goldfish from our lake without killing them?
Q. We have two Japanese Goldfish in our lake. They live in this one section and they will not leave, they are killing all of the other fish in our lake. We have a dog who loves to swim in our lake and we are just worried that some how she will get bitten by them or they will multiply. Is there anyway we can get rid of them without killing them. They are pretty big. *The little section of lake is ours, they seem to like that single section. Is there anyway of getting rid of them?

A. Do you mean koi? Koi can grow over 2 feet in length and are more than likely what you are seeing. A dog is in no danger of being bitten by a koi or goldfish. Mine nibble my fingers when I feed them. If they bother you that much, contact a local pond supply shop and ask if they would accept them as donations. Then find a very large net and bucket to take them in.

How come only lake water can curl my hair?
Q. I have fine hair that I can never ever get to curl, it just ends up wavy and weird with a bunch of random kinks in it. But this summer I've noticed that if I've been in a lake, and let my hair dry without messing with it (like while laying on the beach) it gets ringlet curls all over! I love it but I can't figure out how to make it do the same thing coming out of the shower! Does it have something to do with lake water? Or what?

What is the best lake in Southern Oregon?
Q. So we are new to the area (Medford) and we are looking for the best lake around here (anywhere within 45 min drive). There are so many lakes! So who has the best day use picinic area, like maybe with a BBQ or fire pit? Oh and fishing. Any Suggestions?
Asked by PuppyLove - Fri Apr 11 14:53:45 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Hard to go wrong with Hartish Park at Applegate Lake for great spot for a picnic. Great mountain backdrop, large day-use picnic area, and decent fishing in season. This spot is especially good during the hot summers in the Rogue Valley. As a closer, early season alternative, try Emigrant Lake just outside of Ashland. Before the summer heat arrives, this lake is great for all you mention in your question, but has little shade.

How do you make a lake that goes straight up and down on roller coaster tycoon?

A. Are you referring to what looks like a waterfall? In order to do that I thinkg you have to create the water on the ground first. Then on the higher land create your lake/pond and drag the water tool to the edge of the land. It should create that effect.

Q. We have a small lake at the local community park and its in dismal condition. From time to time the fish just up and die and the water is murky. I have offered to help by taking responsibility to get it cleaned up. Only I havent a clue where to start. Any ideas would be most appreciated.

A. You need to do some research. There are firms that specialize in this area that can help you. do not pour chlorine in a natural pond! That would be a toxic spill !!! The most important thing you can do to improve water quality in a pond is to try to keep runoff contamination, say during a heavy rain event, from washing nutrients or pollutants into the pond. This can be done by changing the grade around the pond to slow down the speed at which water enters or planting buffers of grasses or other plants, again to slow down the speed of any runoff. Slower water carries less sediment and will get there cleaner. If the pond is surrounded by mowed lawn, perhaps you can convince whoever is caring for it to stop fertilizing. If that is not… [cont.]

Where is the best place to propose at Town Lake in Austin, TX?
Q. I have not been to Austin in years. I am planning a trip and will be staying at the Radisson at Town Lake. I plan on making a reservation for one of the horse drawn carriages to take us down the lake and back and drop us off at Carmelo's (probably). There's like hundreds of turtles below and ducks and egrets. I've never been at night, so I don't know if they're out then. There's also the bridge when you go the other way (towards Congress), but it is heavily used. Also, right now, the crape myrtles are in full bloom around the Four Seasons and it is literally "snowing" blooms. It might be as simple as just walking out your hotel lobby. good luck. Personally I liked the federal campground off I-80 before you reach the crest of the mountain. It's near Emmigrant Gap, CA Don't forget to visit Donners Pass. Tragic times there.

Visiting Inverness and would like to see the loch ness lake?
Q. Hi. I am planning on visiting Scotland and Ive always wanted to see the Loch Ness lake (not looking for the monster, just want to see this popular lake) and i was wondering how far is it from Inverness and how to get to the lake. Thank you.

A. The start of the loch is about ten miles from Inverness, and it is about 25 miles long. The easiest way to see the Loch, if you don't have a car, would be to take a boat trip from Inverness, which sail there via the Caledonian Canal. The boats leave from a quayside next to the swing bridge about a mile or so on the road out of town. I think the company which runs the boats is called "Jacobite Tours" - I don't know whether they run all year round though. The boats stop at the famous Drumnadrochit castle which give you the chance to get off and have a look around. Jacobite Tours also do bus tours from Inverness - see the website for details. Sightings of the monster are not guaranteed!

How can i catch lake erie walleye from shore?
Q. I'm going up to lakeside, ohio in late July and there is a big pier that goes out onto the lake about 80-100 yards into the lake. I was wondering if I could catch some walleye from the pier there, probably at night. Anyone think i can do this and if so are their any specific techniques?

A. Although the walleye are in 70-72 ft. of water right now your best bet for catching a walleye would be to throw a Rapala countdown around that pier at night. Having said that, why dont you get a couple dozen minnows and bottom fish off that pier for some yellow perch. You stand a better chance of catching them than walleye. The weather here has been quite volatile here lately so the lake might be a bit choppy. Good Luck though. Have a good holiday!!

What type of fishing line is best for fishing on the shore at a lake?
Q. So my friends and I love to fish. We fish on a river about everyday. We never fished at a lake before so we are going tomorrow to lake michigan. We don't have much money to get a boat so we are fishing off the shore. The only question I have. What type of fishing line is best used to catch those big fish in the lake?
Asked by BiLinda13 - Wed Jun 23 21:39:08 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The water which you fish really isn't the issue to consider. Instead, consider what fish you will be going for and what kind of baits you will be using. If you're just a casual Bass and Panfish person, stick with a monofilament line in the 6-10 pound range. You can throw about any bait you want to when staying within this limit, except for heavier baits and deep running baits like jigs or deep diving crankbaits. If you plan on using deep diving/running or heavy baits, you'll probably want to up the line a bit. Look into the 12 to 14 pound monofilament. If you're going for "teethy" fish like Pike or Musky, you'll want to at least use a braided leader. I absolutely hate braided line, but sometimes it is necessary. Beware of this stuff… [cont.]

What do turtles eat that are caught near a lake?
Q. My sister and her friend just caught a turtle in a lake and are planning ti keep it for a day then let it go. The turtle was caught near a lake and is about 4 inches long. What would you feed a turtle?
Asked by Violet - Mon Jun 22 15:05:05 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It really depends on the type of turtle that they caught. Snappers eat primarily fish but will also eat frogs, worms, snakes, other turtles and other small creatures. Painted turtles eat fish and frogs as well but also eat vegetation (mine loved to eat lettuce). If it is a tortoise and not a turtle, they primarily eat vegetation as well (once again lettuce will work). Pet shops have pellets that any type of turtle or tortoise will enjoy. If they only keep it for a day just offer it some lettuce and let it eat in private. If it is still there in an hour try a small piece of fish. One day of not eating will not kill the turtle, so don't worry if it won't accept your food. When they release it they should probably put it back where… [cont.]

Q. i moved her from illinois and always used verizon and was very satisfied with there service. but they dont allow contracts from this area. so i went with sprint. my phone would go on roaming half the time even when i was in town, i live about 10 miles out of town and it would get no signal at all. im thinking about trying cingular. i want a company that offers mobile web and most other options. any suggestions from people that like around the lake area here in missouri. i dont travel more than 30 miles from my home so i dont need great coverage. but it has to be usable just around this area. and preferably a company with unlimited nights and weekend calling. most of my calls are after 9 pm. i was paying $70 a month through verizon for 1000… [cont.]

A. The reality is that there are still places in central Missouri that are dead zones, without dependable service from any provider even today. Cingular is noted to be one of the best companies and you cannot go wrong with their service. What I have done is found a place close to where I stayed (Lake of the Ozarks) where I got a good signal and then regularly hung around that area for my calls.

How might a lake or ocean affect the weather of the surrounding area during the summer? During the winter?
Q. How might a lake or ocean affect the weather of the surrounding area during the summer? During the winter?

A. Because water loses and gains heat very slowly, the surrounding area would have a more stable temperature than if it didn't have that body of water.

Is there a lake people swim long distance?
Q. I usually swim 4kms everyday. But I've always wanted to be able to say I've swum accross an entire lake. There's a lake here in my area, but because of the many motorboats swimming accros the lake is not allowed. Is there a lake somewhere people go to swim accross it?

A. I live in Michigan. One of the feats people have tried is to swim the straits of Mackinaw which is about six miles or 9 kilometers long and separates Lower Michigan from Upper Michigan. This is where Lakes Michigan and Huron converge. I suggest wearing a wet suit because of the chilling year round water temperatures.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of living in Lake Forest, Illinois?
Q. I am interested in relocating to Lake Forest, Illinois after the year 2009. Lake Forest is located north of Chicago in Lake County and although Lake Country is the home of the Chicago Bears, I do not know the advantages and disadvantages of living in Lake Forest? Also, does Lake Forest have the METRA and/or the Chicago Transit Authority? My question is, what are the advantages and disadvantages of living in Evanston, Illinois and is it a good city to reside in? Why or why not?

A. the metra and CTA do not go that far. lake forest is a rich suburb. i lived just north of there in lake bluff. my dad taught high school in lake forest. things may have changed, that was about 40 years ago but it is probably still relatively wealthy. big houses. you might not be able to afford it. see if you can find any houses or apartments within your price range there. the winters are really cold. the summers are really hot. it's near lake michigan. evanston is not as high class. more middle class and lower class people live there, but rich people too. i still think it's too far out for public transportation.

A. have an awareness party. select a place, whether in your own home, a block party, in a public park, etc. print up flyers to announce the reason for the awareness party. put an ad in your local newspaper. if your local schools have a school newspaper ask if they would also write an announcement. put flyers up in grocery stores, civic centers, and any other place they will let you post. sounds like an excellent project!!! good luck and many blessings.
