This list includes only the population within a municipality's boundaries as defined at the time of the census. Many municipalities are part of a larger census metropolitan area or census agglomeration. For their ranking, see the list of the 100 largest metropolitan areas in Canada.

Very few are listed as being in one of the Atlantic Provinces – New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as the Prairie Provinces – Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. There are none listed in the Territories – Nunavut, Northwest Territories, and Yukon. The last province, with an average (relatively) amount of cities listed, is British Columbia.
