Mexico

The United Mexican States (Spanish: Estados Unidos Mexicanos (help·info)), commonly known as Mexico (pronounced / ˈ m ɛ k s ɨ k oʊ /; Spanish: México, IPA: [ˈmexiko] ( listen)), is a federal constitutional republic in North America. It is bordered on the north by the United States; on the south and west by the Pacific Ocean; on the southeast by Guatemala, Belize, and the Caribbean Sea; and on the east by the Gulf of Mexico. Covering almost two million square kilometres (over 760,000 sq mi), Mexico is the fifth largest country in the Americas by total area and the thirteenth largest independent nation in the world. With an estimated population of over 112 million, it is the eleventh most populous country and the most populous Spanish-speaking country. Mexico is a federation comprising thirty-one states and a Federal District, the capital city.

In Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica many cultures matured into advanced civilizations such as the Olmec, the Toltec, the Teotihuacan, the Zapotec, the Maya and the Aztec before the first contact with Europeans. In 1521, Spain conquered and colonized the territory from its base in México-Tenochtitlan, which was administered as the Viceroyalty of New Spain. This territory would eventually become Mexico as the colony's independence was recognized in 1821. The post-independence period was characterized by economic instability, the Mexican-American War and territorial cession to the United States, a civil war, two empires and a domestic dictatorship. The latter led to the Mexican Revolution in 1910, which culminated with the promulgation of the 1917 Constitution and the emergence of the country's current political system. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time that an opposition party won the presidency from the Institutional Revolutionary Party.

Mexico has one of the world's largest economies, and is considered both a regional power and middle power. In addition, Mexico was the first Latin American member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development OECD (since 1994), and a firmly established upper-middle income country. Mexico is considered a newly industrialized country and an emerging power. It has the thirteenth largest nominal GDP and the eleventh largest by purchasing power parity. The economy is strongly linked to those of its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, especially the United States. Mexico ranks fifth in the world and first in the Americas by number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites with 31, and in 2007 was the tenth most visited country in the world with 21.4 million international arrivals per year.

How good would an exchange trip to Mexico look on a college application?
Q. I really want to go on an exchange trip to Mexico to learn about the culture. The school takes us to a really nice piece of Mexico and we stay with a family there and learn more about the language, people, and customs. My parents seem to think that it won't make much of a difference on my college application and it's a lot of money. I'm having a hard time finding proof for them. Please help me :( :(
Asked by salimc777 - Thu Oct 30 17:18:48 2008 - Financial Aid - 2 Answers - Comments

A. It depends on what type of college you are looking at and your major. If for example you're majoring in Spanish it would look great if you wanted to be considered for the Spanish Department's Honors Program. If you're leaning towards a large, state university then things like this which help you to stand out from the pack can move you to different levels and help you to become much more appealing for scholarships and admission. Private colleges love love love this kind of thing, seriously if you can and want to do it, do it. I wish I could have had this kind of opportunity.

What are the racial demographics of Mexico City and Mexico in general?
Q. I know its a weird question to ask but I'm planning on living there for a while and I'm wondering what the population characteristics are. Is it majority Mestizo? Does it have tons of Indiginous peoples? Does Mexico City really have a large European descended population?
Asked by Fumaman - Fri May 16 03:57:12 2008 - Mexico City - 3 Answers - Comments

A. 10% white,.-80 % percent mestizo and 10% of native americans. As Salvador F said, most of the so called Mestizo are not really mestizo, some of them will be whiter and some will be 100% racially native american but living as Mestizos. Native americans in Mexico are the people who still speak their native tongue, still wear their traditonal dresses etc. Now the people from north of Mexico tend to be taller than the rest and have less Native American blood in their veins but still a lot Native looking. the more you travel south people tend to be darker and smaller, and racial differences between rich and poor is greater. rich people tend to be whiter, poor people tend to be darker. Mexico City is very cosmopolitan and you will find people… [cont.]
