Nounmiles
AnagramsLatinFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A mile is a unit of length in a number of different systems. In contemporary English, mile most commonly refers to the statute mile of 5,280 feet (exactly 1,609.344 meters) or the nautical mile of 1,852 meters (about 6,076.1 ft). There are many other historical miles, and similar units in other systems translated as miles in English, varying between one and fifteen kilometers. It is about a third of the old measurement, the league. Use of the mile as a unit of measurement is largely confined to the United States and the United Kingdom where it remains customary. Elsewhere it has been replaced by the kilometer as a measure of distance. There have been several abbreviations for mile (with and without trailing period): mi, ml, m, M. In the United States, the National Institute of Standards and Technology now uses and recommends mi but in everyday usage (at least in the United States and in the United Kingdom) usages such as miles per hour and miles per gallon are almost always abbreviated as mph or mpg (rather than mi/h or mi/gal). The formula "multiply by 8 and divide by 5" to convert miles to kilometers gives a conversion of 1.6. As it is only slightly lower than the actual conversion factors, it is a useful approximation. Q. Are there labor standards that regulate how many miles or hours a professional driver (not racing) can drive in one day? I would imagine that there is something out there given the number of long distance truckers we have on the highways who may become fatigued, lose focus, lose control of their rigs, etc. I can't find anything on the subject. Thanks for any input. Asked by SilverFox - Mon Nov 27 00:17:31 2006 - - 4 Answers - 9 Comments A. Commercial drivers are limited to 14 hours of work in a 24 hour period. Of those 14 hours, they are allowed to drive 11, and up to 2 additional hours in an emergency situation brought about by unforseen problems (snow blizzard to get to safety). The max speed limit in US is about 75 miles an hour. Giving time for stopping, starting, traffic, etc, the average speed of a driver will be somewhere around 65-69 miles an hour. You can figure it out from there. Some states, CA, OR, WA, IL, IA, IN for example have lower limits for big trucks. This information on the hours of work is found in the FMCSR by Department of Transportation. That's Federal Motor Carrier's Safety Regulaions. In addition, each state has their own rules. CA has not,… [cont.] Answered by Broke_Daddy - Mon Nov 27 00:27:07 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "miles" Saari cruises to second Equinox triumph in three years
