A stop, plosive, or occlusive is a consonant sound produced by stopping the airflow in the vocal tract. The terms plosive and stop are usually used interchangeably, but they are not perfect synonyms. Plosives are oral stops with a pulmonic egressive airstream mechanism. The term is also used to describe oral (non-nasal) stops. Many use the term nasal continuant rather than nasal stop to refer to sounds like [n] and [m]. One should be aware that this article treats these "nasal continuants" as nasal stops.

Why is a voiced laminoglottal nasal plosive an impossible speech sound?
Q. This question is for all you linguists out there, lol. I'm taking a introductory Linguistics course and I don't understand why it is not impossible :(

A. Well... I'd probably choke myself if I tried to make that sound! "Lamino" indicates that the sound is made by using the blade of the tongue, rather than the tip of the tongue. Since the blade of your tongue is much larger than the tip, it covers a greater area. The glottis is found in your throat, and much too far back to contact with the tongue. Furthermore, as far as I know, there's no such thing as a glottal plosive. You can only make a glottal stop ( ) and then two pseudo-fricatives (h, ) (that's not a proper linguistic term, just note that the "breathy"/"heavy" and voiceless glottal fricatives aren't true fricatives). Without even considering the nasal aspect of the sound, you already know that you can't use the flat part of your… [cont.]

Is this a savage and obscene plosive or one of the "Best of American Poetry 2007" ?
Q. *** etymology by Marilyn Nelson The filth hissed at us when we venture out always in twos or threes, never alone seems less a language SPOKEN than one SPAT in savage plosives, primitive, obscene: a cavemob nya-nya, limited in frame of reference and novelty, the same suggestions of what we or they could do, or should, ad infinitum. Yesterday, a mill girl spat a phrase I d never heard before. I stopped and looked at her, perplexed. I derived its general from the context, but was stumped by the etymology of one word. What was its source? Which demon should we thank for words it must be an abomination to think? *** If you want to join a book discussion on this: Don't hit that dudes link. A. My brow furrows as i try to understand this: here goes To me it seemed to be about being in a strange dangerous place or country where despite the language barrier the writer was able to feel the disdain the locals had for them. That they way words are spoken is as revealing as the words themselves If I have totally butchered this, I am sorry
