Premium Station Information

A premium station is a category of railway station on Melbourne's suburban rail network which is operated by Metro Trains Melbourne.[1] In terms of station standards, a premium station is a high standard station which sits above the medium standard host stations and the low standard unmanned stations.

Each premium station has:[2]

The premium station program was commenced in 1994 under the Public Transport Corporation.,[3] with Mount Waverley being the first station receiving premium status.[4] By the end of 1995 the number of staffed stations increased from 35 to 51.[5]

The five City Loop stations (Flinders Street, Southern Cross, Flagstaff, Melbourne Central, and Parliament) are all premium stations. Other stations are assigned premium status based mainly on their level of patronage or their safeworking facilities.

Including the five City Loop stations, there are 77 premium stations,[6] as listed below:

Future premium stations

24 existing stations will be upgraded from unmanned or host to premium or constructed in the near future to bring the total number of premium stations to 101.

1 Upgrade to be completed by 2013 as part of a $13.3 million dollar project by the Victorian Government 2 Construction to be completed by 2013 as part of the extension of the Epping railway line from Epping to South Morang. 3 Upgrade to be completed by 2012 as part of the electrification of the Bendigo railway line from Sydenham to Sunbury. 4 Construction to commence sometime in 2010 as part of the Victorian Government's 'New Stations for Growth Areas' program.
