The Central Processing Unit (CPU) or the processor is the portion of a computer system that carries out the instructions of a computer program, and is the primary element carrying out the computer's functions. This term has been in use in the computer industry at least since the early 1960s (Weik 2007). The form, design and implementation of CPUs have changed dramatically since the earliest examples, but their fundamental operation remains much the same.

Early CPUs were custom-designed as a part of a larger, sometimes one-of-a-kind, computer. However, this costly method of designing custom CPUs for a particular application has largely given way to the development of mass-produced processors that are made for one or many purposes. This standardization trend generally began in the era of discrete transistor mainframes and minicomputers and has rapidly accelerated with the popularization of the integrated circuit (IC). The IC has allowed increasingly complex CPUs to be designed and manufactured to tolerances on the order of nanometers. Both the miniaturization and standardization of CPUs have increased the presence of these digital devices in modern life far beyond the limited application of dedicated computing machines. Modern microprocessors appear in everything from automobiles to cell phones and children's toys.

What is the difference between the Xeon and the Core processors by intel?
Q. I can see that Xeon can be used in really high performance computers, but I also see that the general specs are the same with the Core processors. Are Xeon's really faster than Core processors? How?
Asked by Lex or Louis - Mon Sep 14 04:32:34 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I have to take exception to Anatol's comment about Xeon cpu's being single core... maybe they are in his servers, but the servers I build are with quad core Xeons: The Xeons are for server motherboard and these computers are used for special projects - the motherboards can be used as a workstation is a tower case rather than a rack mount case. These are usually used in systems with prolonged periods of constant use and built to higher standards that normal desktop computers. Are they faster? Well they aren't built for overclocking. They can have similar specs, but the Core processors are the aftermath of the process that was used to create the Server processor - the sure & steady - rock solid server class Xeon. Any independant loan processors here that work from home or from a company?
Q. If there is any independant mortgage loan processors that work from home, how much of average of loans per month do you process? Did you yourself have to go out and find companies that would let you processor for them? Do you work for more than one company? Do you set your hours for a regular workday (since most is commission only) and last, but not least, is it worth it?

Will the 32nm intel processors that arrive in '10 be compatible with the upcoming X58 motherboards?
Q. Nehalem arrives in two weeks with 45nm i7 processors right? But will the 32nm processors that arrive in 2010 also work with the X58's that are coming out along side the i7s?
Asked by Katner - Tue Nov 4 00:04:31 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. nope, the x58 will be used for the 45nm i7, then there will be a mainstream cpu that uses a diffrent chipset, and socket, then there is the sandy bridge(32nm) by that time, intel would make another chipset.
